_______________
John Flintoff kept a diary from 27 April 1841 until near his death 31 August 1901. Many of the facts reported here on the Flintoff family come from that diary.
In 1976, The Caswell Messenger published its 50th anniversary edition. It included excerpts from the John Fletcher Flintoff diary, along with the following preface:
"The following excerpts were taken from a diary kept by John Flintoff from April 27, 1841, to the year of his death in 1901. He died on August 31 of that year and is buried in the Methodist Church cemetery in Yanceyville. This diary was recorded in 1972 by Betty Motley Sartin, wife of David Sledge Sartin, son of Ema Sledge Sartin, daughter of Alice Flintoff Sledge, daughter of Charlie B. Flintoff, son of John F. Flintoff."
Here is the only entry with respect to the Charley Brown Flintoff house:
"Nov. 30 1898: I came here with Mary Fannie to Charlie's large brick house of 12 rooms with 312 1/2 acres of land he bought in April last of Dr. Stanfield estate -- a very cold time we suffered -- Charles family came three days afterwards -- on his and my farm we made 135 lbs. of corn -- 10 bushels of wheat and 11,500 lbs. of tobacco -- the two tract has nearly 400 acres -- I deeded Charlie 160 acres of it in 1882."

The Dr. Stanfield reference most likely is Dr. Josiah Asbury Stanfield, M.D., who died 14 February 1896. He married Agnes Ware Sargent, daughter of Stephen Sargent and Ann Payne Ware Sargent. The first husband of Ann Payne Ware was James Richardson, who built the house in question (referred to by the family as the "Brickhouse").
Dr. Josiah Asbury Stanfield and his family lived in Leasburg in what now is called the Stanfield-Connally-Kimbro house.

_______________
Entries in the diary kept by John F. Flintoff portray very realistically the situation which many people in Caswell County faced at the end of the war. On August, 17, 1865, he wrote:
"The people have had scarcely bread to supply them till harvest fall -- they will live on what there is -- very little meat anywhere to be had -- altho I have corn sufficient to supply my wants until Nov, when new corn will be dry enough to grind -- we have had 3 bad crops -- Years 1862-3-4 -- this year so far promises good for corn & tobacco for which I am worst by hard work -- this summer I am feeble as to health and only weigh 136 lost 12 lbs. in 4 months tho I am still at work -- My negroes all stay with me while the most of others are running about from home to home believing they are free -- many of them are killed and dieing for want of money and protection -- poor creatures -- I have to ride often after them and arrest them for trial, for their fighting, stealing and other meaness they are very troublesome to the white people."
Five days before Christmas he noted that he then had plenty of grain and pork and 85 bushels of wheat. "Bete, Sarah and William left me as free folks -- John, Mary, Sally & Henry stays with me yet -- I have to hire them as free Negroes." For Flintoff the situation may have been stable for the better part of a year, but on Christmas Day, 1866, his diary entry begins: "Allen left me. . . ." And in January, 1868, he noted: "All my negroes have left me -- I hired 3 hands this year. . . ."
