- Caswell County History: Not Found in the History Books
Mary Emma (Mamie) Sledge (1874-1917) was born and died in Caswell County, North Carolina, a daughter of Crawford D. Sledge (1825-1896) and Mary Pet Neal Sledge (1840-1908). She rests at the Sledge family cemetery in Providence, Caswell County, North Carolina.
On May 11, 1892, in Caswell County she married Captain Pierre François Louis Armand de Larade (1855-1929). He was born in France and served for 14 years in the French military. He was charged with fraud and sentence to time in jail. He fled France and came to the United States where he changed his name to Andri (sometimes Anthony) Louis LeLouis.
How they met is unknown. The couple had at least two children. Two sons took the surname LeLouis.
After the death of Mary Emma (Mamie) Sledge de Larade (or LeLouis), her husband moved to Mississippi, possibly to live with a son. There he died and is buried.
_______________
Another Version (from the obituary of son Anthony Louis LeLouis):
Born in Yanceyville, N.C., Jan. 6, 1896, Anthony Louis LeLouis was the son of Capt. Louis LeLouis, a Frenchman who settled in the United States shortly after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. After trading in railroad property in New York and farming in Virginia, Captain LeLouis moved his family to the Clarksdale, Miss., area in 1904.
