_______________
May have taught at the Vanhook Subscription School in Person County, North Carolina.
Fifty typed pages of Civil War letters between Alexander O'Briant and his wife, Emily Mary Whitefield. Emily Mary Whitefield was the daughter of William Whitefield, the schoolmaster of some fame in Person County, North Carolina. William's second wife was Sophia D. Briggs. Her death is given as April 29, 1859 by online family trees, but without reference to any primary source. However, in one of the letters from her step-daughter, dated June 1862, is the following:
"Grandmother Briggs is likely to die, she has passy [possibly palsy]."
Query, however, whether the stepdaughter would refer to her stepmother as "Grandmother Briggs." Could she have been referring to the mother of Sophia D. Briggs?

_______________
T. A. Whitefield, M. D. A man of scholarly attainments, well versed in the science of medicine, T. A. Whitefield, M. D., was for many years one of the leading physicians of Montgomery county, but on account of ill health was forced to abandon his profession, and is now living retired from active work in New Providence. A son of the late L. S. Whitefield, he was born June 16, 1865, in Montgomery county, where he has always made his home. His paternal grandfather, William Whitefield. was a native of North Carolina.
L. S. Whitefield was born on the home farm in North Carolina in 1832. A man of versatile talents, he was variously employed during his earlier life, at one time having been employed in mercantile pursuits at New Providence, Montgomery county. He invested largely in land, and for forty years prior to his death, which occurred in 1906, was engaged in farming, a part of the time living on the farm now occupied by the doctor, but owning another estate. He married, in 1847, Eliza Trice, who was born in Davidson county, Tennessee, November 20, 1833, and died in Montgomery county, December 11, 1903. She was of Virginian ancestry, her father, T. H. Trice, having been born in Virginia, where his father located on coming from Scotland to America. Of the two children born of their union, Dr. Whitefield, the younger child, is the only one living. In his political views, L. S. Whitefield advocated the principles of the Democratic party. Fraternally he was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Order of Masons. Religiously he belonged to the Methodist Episcopal church, while his wife was a member of the Christian church.
Obtaining the rudiments of his education in the public schools of New Providence, T. A. Whitefield took a course of study in the higher branches of learning at Clarksville. Going then to Cincinnati, he was there graduated from the Pulte Medical School with the degree of M. D., after which he took a post graduate course at the Hahnemann Medical College, a homoeopathic institution in Chicago, Illinois. Amply fitted for the exacting profession which he had chosen, and for which he was so well adapted, Dr. Whitefield located at New Providence, where he built up an extensive practice. At the end of seventeen years of strenuous professional work, the doctor's health became undermined to such an extent that he was forced to relinquish his profession, and is now living retired at his pleasant home.
Dr. Whitefield married, February 8. 1904. Annie Darnell, a daughter of James Darnell, of Montgomery county, and they are the parents of two bright and interesting children, Stanley and Annetta. A man of much force of character, strong in his convictions, the doctor is Independent in polities, supporting as far as possible the principles of the Democratic party. Fraternally he is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Order of Masons, belonging to both lodge and chapter; and of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Religiously both Dr. and Mrs. Whitefield are members of the Christian church.
