      _______________

Around 1750, Plikard Dedrick and Elizabeth Hartzoe Siler started a productive plantation farm on Lacy Creek, fewer than four miles north of downtown Siler City, Chatham County, North Carolina. The Silers had sailed from Rhine, Germany in 1741.

In May 1774, William Ditto was appointed overseer of Harman's Road from Love's Creek to the Guilford County line. The road was a segment of the road from Guilford Courthouse to Fayetteville. In 1791, David Smith and the Radcliff family acquired land on Love's Creek. In February of 1794, John Siler, grandson of Plikard Siler, bought land where William Ditto had lived. At least three of the tracts of land purchased by John Siler had previously been owned by David Smith and the Radcliff family. By 1805, John Siler was living on a plantation farm of 615 acres in a house on the lot where the U.S. Post Office (116 East Raleigh Street) is now located. A good spring of water was located about 350 feet east of the house. By 1815, John Siler was operating a country store near his home. John Siler and his wife are buried in the local Oakwood cemetery.

On December 15, 1842, William W. (Captain Billy) Matthews bought John Siler's house and 140 acres. Mr. Matthews and his wife Margaret Cheek provided food and lodging for travelers at their house. The place was soon called Matthews Crossroads which is near the present day intersection of North Chatham Avenue and Second Street. The north-south road passed in front of the Matthew's house which is where Scott Alley is today. On June 10, 1861, a company of volunteers for the Confederate Army named The Chatham Boys organized and drilled in the front yard of the William Matthew's house. The group later became Company G of the 26th North Carolina Regiment.

By 1870, Samuel Siler was operating a small water-powered grist mill about three blocks south of the Siler-Matthews House (home of John Siler and later William Matthews). The mill was located near where South Chatham Avenue crosses the creek that flows through downtown today. Samuel Siler also owned a storehouse near the mill that was operated by his son Cincinnatus Siler. On July 13, 1880, the post office was opened in Samuel Siler's storehouse. Cincinnatus Siler was appointed postmaster and the post office was named Energy. In 1882, Samuel Siler's storehouse was sold at auction. By 1884, the Siler-Matthews House was being operated as a hotel by A. C. Jordan.

On April 16, 1884, the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway completed its track between Sanford and Greensboro. The depot was named Siler Station in recognition of Samuel Siler who donated the land on which it was located. E. R. McLean was the railroad stations first agent. On July 3, 1884, the post office was named Siler Station. On December 10, 1884, J. George Hanner was appointed postmaster. In 1884, E. R. McLean and Co. was opened as a general merchandise store and was located along the east side of North Birch Avenue near the middle of the 100 block. Early in 1885, the post office was moved to the store of E. R. McLean and Co. on North Birch Avenue. On November 11, 1885, a tobacco warehouse and market named The Chatham Warehouse Company opened. It was located at 138 and 144 North Chatham Avenue. The president/ manager was O.A. Hanner and the secretary/treasurer was E. R. McLean.

In 1885, John F. Lambe and his brother A. A. Lambe opened the firm Teague and Lambe, general merchandise and building supply store. The store was located in what had formerly been the storehouse of Samuel Siler. In 1885 (prior to Town incorporation), Dr. J. A. Turner was recognized as Mayor of Siler City. His father and mother are buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City. On July 28, 1886, the post office was named Siler City.

On January 12, 1887, the Thompson School opened and was located on the site of where City Hall is located today. The owner and superintendent was Professor James Alexander Wilson Thompson. The bell from the Thompson School has been preserved and is mounted in W.F. Collins Park.

On March 7, 1887, the North Carolina General Assembly incorporated the Town of Siler City. The corporate limits of the town were defined as being one-half mile from the depot of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad and as running with the four cardinal points of the compass. The following officers were named to serve until an election was held: Mayor J.. Guthrie; Commissioner D. G. Fox; Commissioner A. A. Lambe; Commissioner E. B. McLean; Commissioner A. R. Siler; Commissioner R. C. Siler; and Marshal J. J. Crutchfield.
