Thomas Rice of Hanover County, Virginia, served as a Revolutionary War soldier and as sheriff of Caswell County, North Carolina.
Caswell County Sheriff: Thomas Rice 1779-1780
Thomas Rice -Will- w. 13 Apr.1800. Wife Abegail; son Zeri Rice; 6 children or heirs: Zeri Rice, George Sims, Robert Blackwell, Lancelot Johnston, Daniel Gwyn, Tench Vannoy; negro Lydia to choose her master; Margatet Lackey, land on Country Line where John Payne (Taylor) formerly lived to be sold; surveying instruments to be sold; after wife's death land to be divided among her children; each child to have a horse as it comes of age. Exec: Robert Blackwell, Lancelot Johnston.
Wit: Thomas Slade, Jr., Zear Gwyn.
Codicil; Four youngest sons to have blacksmith tools. 13 Apr. 1800.

Rice - Information wanted in regard to Thomas Rice, of Hanover County, Va. Signed deed in 1735, with wife Joyce. Afterwards moved to Caswell county, N. C. Will probated there in 1800-3, mentions sons (sons-in-law) Lancelot Johnston, Daniel Guynn, Blackwell, Vannoy, and son Levy, I think, and wife Abigail, presumably 2d wife; had a daughter Joyce, half-sister of the above mentioned. There was a Colonel Thomas Rice of French and Indian war, presumably the same. Had brother Hezekiah, colonel in Revolutionary war, also living in Caswell county, N. C. Thomas Rice was spoken of as ex-shertif of the county in 1789. A Mary Rice, of Hanover, married James Garland and they had a son William. "Cabells and their Kin," p. 380. Thomas Rice received 3,000 acres of land for services as captain in French and Indian War, probably located the claims in North Carolina.
