    • Hunter McKee (1886-1970)

Both Lizzie McKee and Hunter McKee are described as black servants. The head-of-house, Sidney Slade Lea, is a son of the Thomas L. Lea, who may have owned Jeff McKee and Linny McKee. Most of the males in this family owned many slaves. See the reference to Linny by Ann Wright Lea in "Ann of the Ku Klux Klan" by Tom Henderson. Ann Wright Lea was a sister of Sidney Slade Lea. Their brother, John Green Lea, was head of the Ku Klux Klan when Senator John W. Stephens was murdered in 1870.

“Lillie Vaughn was born in Alamgro, a portion of Pittsylvania Couty later annexed into Danville City. Written across the top of a page in the county’s Census for 1920 is the identification “Almagro Village,” followed immediately by “Means All Negros”. And indeed what followed was a settlement-then unincorporated-composed of 265 Negro families, among whom a large number of persons were originally from North Carolina and 62 percent of the families were property owners.
