    • Mac Alvin Carroll (1931-2011)

      Mac A. Carroll, 80, of 123 Mac Carroll Drive, died peacefully at his home October 26, 2011, surrounded by his family, following a four month period of declining health. Born in Caswell County on January 10th, 1931, he was the son of Reuben Henderson Carroll and Marthann Patterson Carroll. He was a graduate of Cobb Memorial High School and was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. After retiring from Cole Chevrolet he worked for and retired from the Caswell County Sheriff's Department and was one of the founding members of The Providence Fire Department where he served his community for over 20 years. He also worked for Harrelson Funeral Service, was a member of Cobb Ruritan Club, Wildwood Hunting Club, Bethel United Methodist Church, and loved hunting. Mac Carroll leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Julia Fuqua Carroll, his daughters, Dianne C. Moorefield, Lisa C. McDowell, and Brenda C. Pruitt, his sons-in-law Herbert McDowell and Jim Pruitt, his three grandsons, Elliott McDowell, Levi Pruitt, and Chase Pruitt, and his sister, Bernice Goodson of Danville, VA. In addition to being predeceased by his parents, he was also predeceased by twelve other siblings - Sisters: Bertha C. Travis, Theodosia C. Lovell, Nettie C. Poteat, Minnie C. Powell, Omie C. Poteat, Loretta C. Aldridge, Vergie C. Wood; Brothers: Eugene Edgar Carroll, Claude Swanson Carroll, Raymond Henderson Carroll, and William Henry Carroll.

      Services were held Saturday, October 29th, 2011 at 2:00 at Bethel United Methodist Church on Park Springs Rd, Providence, NC. The family received friends at Harrelson Funeral Service in Yanceyville, NC on Friday, October 28th, 2011 from 7:00-8:30 pm and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bethel United Methodist Church - Parsonage Kitchen Fund (c/o Kay Satterfield at 7375 Park Springs Rd, Pelham, NC, 27311) or Providence Fire and Rescue (c/o Gerald Hovatter at 2191 Parks Spring Rd, Providence, NC, 27315).

      Purley Baseball 1950

      This Purley (Caswell County, North Carolina) team won the Dan River Semi-Pro Baseball League 1950 season pennant (regular season champions). According to John Miller Pleasant, this was the only year Purley competed in the Dan River League. This was quite an accomplishment for the small community. Team Members: John Miller Pleasant; Mac Carroll; Marion McAdams; Dorsey Bradner; Sam Brandon; Eugene Rudd; Bill Powell; Richard Foster; Jiggs Hodges; Sterling Hudson; John D. Willis; William Arch Pleasant; and Buck Page.
