Fielding Lewis/Fielden Louis Hodges
Source: The Heritage of Caswell County, North Carolina, Jeannine D. Whitlow, Editor (1985) at 282 (Article on Fielding Lewis Hodges by Louise Farmer Jones), from which the following excerpt is taken:
Fielding Lewis (he always signed himself Fielden Louis but numerous officials [and family] have insisted on "correcting" the spelling) was by all accounts a man of remarkable good looks, good sense and good will. Born April 6, 1845 in Pittsylvania Co., Va., according to Evelyn F. Walker, a granddaughter who joined the UDC on his war record, he removed with his father Samuel Hodges to Caswell County some time before the Civil War. Sent off to school at 15 to Tew's Military Academy in Hillsborough, N.C., he started drilling for a conflict in which he knew he would be involved. Family tradition states that when he heard his brother George had been killed he hastened to enlist and the picture of him which has survived shows him in what was probably his cadet's uniform at the age of 17, as Manarin's Roster shows him in Co. "C" 41st Regt. Confederate Cavalry in 1864-65. The saddle was preserved by the family for many years before being donated to the State Museum and reputedly exhibited at Fort Fisher museum. Family tradition is that Fielden was detailed to bury his brother.

The 1870 US Census (Pelham Township, Caswell County, North Carolina) entry for Fielden Hodges is a bit difficult to understand. He is shown (age 23), with wife "Geograna" (age 19), and daughter Henrietta (age 2). However, this family appears to be living in the household of William Hodges (age 42) and his wife Mary (age 32). The Hodges have children: Alice (age 13); and Samuel (age 10). All the Hodges were born in Virginia. Also in the household is one Thomas Jones (age 12 and born in North Carolina). However, this Thomas Jones is indicated as a head of household. So, the Fielden Hodges family may have been living in the Thomas Jones household and not the William Hodges household. However, how could a 12-year-old be head of the household?
The Thomas Jones could be Thomas Oldham Jones, younger brother of Georgiana Jones. However, why was he shown as head of household in 1870?

Notes:
That Mary Susan Lea Gatewood is a daughter of William Henry Gatewood and Mary Jane Hodges has not been confirmed by a primary source. However, the following are listed as siblings in The Beaver Pond Neals of Virginia, Carl B. Neal (1965): Dudley Gatewood; Thomas Gatewood; William Gatewood; Samuel Gatewood; James Gatewood; Laura Gatewood; Elizabeth Gatewood; Mrs. Fielding Hodges; and Mrs Robert Daniel. And, her birth year of 1856 works as does the possibility that she is named partially for her mother Mary Jane Hodges.

Note that Caswell County Register of Deeds, Burch Blaylock, gave the life dates for Samuel Hodges as c.1816 - 11 April 1858. Other researchers who visited the Hodges family cemetery believe the dates to be c. 1811 - 11 April 1853. This is supported by the following:
Caswell County Will Books 1843-1868 by Katharine Kerr Kendall (copyright 1986), pp. 63,76, 77 & 82 lists the following: "Will Book R: October Court 1853 p, 89 (Inv. of Property); Will Book R: July Court 1855 pp. 313 & 327(Sale of Property); Will Book R: April Court 1856; page 397 (Div.negroes)"
If the will of Samuel Hodges was proved October 1853 he certainly did not live until 1858.
