Notes |
- Charlie "Eldon" Plunk, 96, of Amarillo died Thursday, May 8, 2008. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Covenant Fellowship Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Gaines and Bob Thomas of Odyssey Hopsice officiating. Burial will be in Stratford Cemetery by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Eldon moved to Amarillo in 1938 from Stratford. He remarried longtime friend, Lillie Taylor of the old San Jacinto Methodist Church. They were married 11 years. A true Panhandle pioneer, Eldon was a farmer, rancher, registered Angus cattle owner, registered quarter horse owner, businessman, entrepreneur and innovator. He truly knew how to grow crops. He was on the cutting edge of irrigation; in fact, he opened the first irrigation well in Potter County. His knowledge of deep plowing, fertilization and irrigation revolutionized farming in the Texas Panhandle. He also built the first horse motel in the U.S., sold DeKalb and Pioneer seed for four years and then went into the Grasshopper mower business.
Eldon was a member of the old San Jacinto Methodist Church, now the Covenant Fellowship Methodist Church in the Avondale Center. He served as president of the Potter County Farm Bureau. Eldon will be missed in this life by many family and friends. May God bless and comfort the entire Plunk family. Amen. Mr. Eldon was preceded in death by his first wife, Bleatha Rivers Fedric Plunk, on May 6, 1996; five brothers, Troy, Lester, Vergil, Chester and Leonard; and a sister, Vera. Survivors include a daughter, Donnis Plunk Irelan Oakley and husband Don of Amarillo; a son, Vic Plunk and wife Penny of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Todd Irelan of Missouri and Shaun Irelan of Massachusetts, Tracey Plunk of Montana, Christy Dunenas of Washington and Lance Plunk of Amarillo; nine great-grandchildren, Declan, Carrig and Fallon Irelan of Missouri, Kayla and Kyle Irelan of Massachusetts, Tashina and Swayla Duenas of Washington and Lanie and Landon Plunk of Amarillo.
