  • Notes
    • Seymour Sylvester married Elizabeth Grace Yarborough who was descended from the Yarbroughs who settled in Amelia County, Virginia, in colonial times. The County of Yorkshire, England is thought to be the place of origin for these Yarbroughs prior to their move to America. They descended from William Yarbrough, one of 60,000 Normans who accompanied William, Duke of Normandy, in the year 1066 to conquer England. Yorkshire originated as an Earldom given to William Yarbrough by "William the Conqueror". Elizabeth's father was Thomas B. Yarborough of Milton, Caswell County, NC. He was born November 26, 1854, either in Caswell County or Virginia, to Thomas S. Yarborough and Elizabeth Terry. The marriage of Thomas S. Yarborough to Elizabeth Terry is proved by a marriage bond February 12, 1850, Caswell County, North Carolina.

Thomas B. Yarborough, a telegraph operator with Western Union Telegraph Company, married Annie Kinchley at Augusta, 1876, where they lived for many years and raised nine children, Joseph, Agnes, Thomas, Elizabeth, Henry, Edgar, Bernard, Anita and Edythe, all born between 1878 and 1899. About 1913, Thomas left Augusta for work in New York, apart from his family, and essentially separated from his wife Annie Kinchley for the remainder of their lives. Thomas S. Yarborough's parents are Richard Yarborough, a mechanic, and Tabitha Johns both born in Virginia in the 1790's. It is highly probable, but as yet unproved [and not likely], that Richard Yarbrough's parents were William Yarbrough and Lennah Andrews of Lunenburg County, VA. We do know that Tabitha Johns (spelled Johus in some records), was born July 20, 1794 at Prince Edward County, VA to Joel Johns, a Baptist minister in Lunenburg County, and Dianisha Bruce.

Elizabeth Terry was born 1830, in Caswell County to Dabney Terry and Elizabeth "Betsy" Jeffreys. Dabney was born in 1804, at Caswell County, NC. He married Betsy October 13, 1825. Betsy's parents were John Jeffreys of Prince Edward County, VA, and Virginia Edwards of Lunenburg County, VA.

Thanks to the preservation of Dabney Terry's Will in The October 1862 Court records for Caswell County, we have some significant family connections. The will shows he was twice married, first to Betsy Jeffreys, and after her death to Martha Yarborough, daughter of Richard Yarborough and Tabitha Johns. Still another connection between these families is the marriage of Dabney's and Betsy's son Abner to Sally B. Yarbrough in 1850, this in addition to Thomas S. Yarbrough's marriage to Elizabeth Terry.

Elizabeth Grace Yarborough's mother Annie Kinchley, was born August 8, 1858, at Savannah, Georgia to Joseph Michael Kinchley and Mary Elizabeth Preston. The Kinchleys were of Irish descent, Joseph's father Michael having been born 1790 in the Parish of Tintirn County, Wexford, Ireland. Michael was already living at Savannah by 1820, where he remained until at least 1830. The family moved to Augusta, Georgia between 1830 and 1836. Joseph's mother Ann was also born in Ireland, 1798.
