_______________
One researcher has written the following. Note, however, that other Lea family researchers dispute this, and conclude that Zachary Lea was not a son of Owen Lea and Elizabeth Wright Lea. Thus, the following is placed here for research purposes only, and researchers are warned to proceed with caution. Note that Zachariah Lea is not shown in this database as a son of Owen Lea and Elizabeth Wright Lea.
"Zachary Lee, was most likely the son of Owen Lee and Elizabeth Wright, (or a yet unknown first wife). He was probably born in Caswell Co., N.C. between 1775 and 1780. The census reports listing Zachary and Rebecca indicate he was born about 1775-80 and she 1780-90. The first recorded census listing for this family was 1810 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Land records show that one Zachree Lee bought land on Horse Creek in the lower part of Rutherford County from a Thomas Neighbors in July 1808. The deed is dated July 2 1808 and can be found at the courthouse in Rutherford County, NC. (Deeds 1807-1816 Vol. 24-26 pg. 275.) The farm was next to one owned by Owen Lee. Based on birth dates of their children, Zachary and Rebecca were probably married the same year. Although no record has been found, it is likely that they were married in Union County, S. C. where Rebecca Brocks’ family lived."

That the Owen Lee mentioned above has not been confirmed as the Owen Lea of this entry, son of John (South Hico) Lea. And, the Lee spelling causes additional doubts.

_______________
The wife of Owen Lea, son of John Lea of Richland Creek, in her claim for a pension for Owen's service during the Revolutionary War (Ref: National Archives & Record Services, Washington, DC, file designation R-6221) states that "the captain under whom . . . Owen served was George Lea his own cousin until George was appointed colonel." Col. George Lea was the son of William Lea (CC). If Col. George Lea and Owen Lea were cousins, apparently their fathers were brothers.
