YANCEYVILLE- Mr. O.M. Dabbs Jr., 69, of 482 Dabbs Farm Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill after a sudden illness. The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Oakview Presbyterian Church by Pastor Bob Hillman and Elder Wallis Smith. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Caswell County, he was the son of the late Obed Middleton Dabbs Sr., and the late Nellie Oakley Dabbs and was married to Mrs. Shirley Aldridge Dabbs, who survives, for over 49 years. Mr. Dabbs was a retired farmer and an elder of Oakview Presbyterian Church. Mr. Dabbs is survived by his wife of the home; two sons, Tony Dabbs and his wife, Teresa and Doug Dabbs and his wife, Shari, both of Yanceyville; four grandchildren, Cheryl Dabbs, Dwayne Dabbs, Ashley Dabbs and Nathan Dabbs; two brothers, Earl Dabbs of Burlington and Leo Dabbs of Lady Lake, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, two sons, Wayne Dabbs and Carl Dabbs and two brothers, W.B. "Pete" Dabbs and Lawrence R. Dabbs.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Oakview Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 802 Oakview Loop Road, Yanceyville, NC 27379 or to the Wayne Dabbs Memorial Scholarship, 2972 Cherry Grove Road., Yanceyville, NC 27379. Volunteers Recognized
In November 1985, North Carolina Governor James G. Martin honored 160 volunteers from across the state at a reception at the Executive Mansion. About 230 people attended from 84 NC counties.
During a short speect, Governor Martin commended all the volunteers and metioned specifically the late Wayne Dabbs of Yanceyville. Dabbs who volunteered with the Anderson Volunteer Fire Department and the Caswell County Rescue Squad, was killed responding to a fire call earlier this year. His wife, Jill Dabbs, and parents Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Dabbs, attended the reception.
