_______________
By Randall Dowdy January 01, 2011:
My grandfather, John Lawrence Dowdy Senior, was Augustus Dowdy Senior's brother. Two of Gus Dowdy's sons are still alive. One, Henry Darnell Dowdy, passed away in 2010. Augustus Dowdy Junior is still alive, but he is in his 80s. He just recently (2010) retired from the auto auction. His contact info is in the phone book in Danville Va, he lives on Jenny Lane, near the old DowdyTown. In fact, he still owns "The Hole", part of Dowdy Town, which is famous in itself from the moon shining days.
Harold Wayne Dowdy lives on HWY 58 East at the edge of the Danville/Ringgold Va line.He still has a car lot, and lives beside it. Then there is Mary Dean Dowdy, his daughter, who is very anti-social, and doesn't want any contact from anyone.

I currently live less than one mile from "The Hole", part of DowdyTown, in Danville Va. In fact I lived there for many years.

_______________
Harold Wayne Dowdy was in and out of criminal legal trouble with respect to the 58 Truck Stop just east of Danville, Virginia. Prostitution often was an issue. He was one of the "Big Six" indicted for operating an interstate prostitution ring in the 1970s. Dowdy operated prostitution houses at multiple locations: North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
See the entry for Bobby Edward Poteat in this database.
_______________
In the RICO indictment Dowdy is cited as operator of five houses of prostitution -- the 58 Truck Stop and Ed's Truck Stop in Pittsylvania County, 304 Truck Stop in Halifax County, 29 Truck Stop in Caswell County, N.C., and Riverside Truck Stop in Orangeburg, S.C. In October 1977 Dowdy was convicted of income tax evasion and willful failure to disclose monies received from operation of a house of prostitution. He was sentenced to four years in prison and fined $5,000.
However, five days before his trial on federal moral charges, Harold Wayne Dowdy of Ringgold changed his plea from innocent to guilty and entered into a plea agreement. At the same time Dowdy's wife, Maria Stoll, also known as Robin, reportedly was expected to change her plea from innocent to guilty on a one-count indictment charging her with perjury. Earlier this year she was accused of lying to a federal grand jury investigating prostitution and racketeering in Pittsylvania County.
