Notes |
- George A. Howard was reportedly born in Anne Arundel County, MD in 1798, but some reports say he was born in Baltimore. It is known he married Alice Clark Thurston, reportedly born in Caroline County, around 1828. Beyond that fact, little seems to be known about their early histories.
George Howard is known to have been first in Halifax County, where on March 25, 1824 he established a weekly newspaper called the FREE PRESS. He removed to the town of Tarboro on August 22, 1826 where he continued the paper under the same name until August 1833, when it was changed to the TARBORO FREE PRESS. In 1852, the paper was changed to THE SOUTHERNER, a banner under which it still runs today, as the DAILY SOUTHERNER. Howard's newspaper strove at all times to be strong, fearless, and an able advocate of the principles and policies of the Democratic Party.
The Howards had 7 known children: Judge George A. Howard (1829-1905); Dr. John Howard (c. 1834), Alice Howard (c. 1836), Jane Howard (c. 1837), William (1842), Margaret Matthewson Howard (1845), and Frank Howard (1849).
George & Alice Howard were the patriarchs of the many Howard descendants who lived in and around Tarboro and contributed greatly to the State of North Carolina. George passed in 1863 at age 65. Alice passed 8 years later in 1871 at age 64.
