The first family member to live in Caswell County was William R. Hatchett, son of Colonel William H. Hatchett, who moved to Shady Grove Township in 1785. Carl Neal cites the genealogist William Scott Morton of Farmville, Prince Edward Co., VA, as naming 7 children and their dates of birth. These dates correspond with information in the 1830 census for Charlotte Co., VA. That information is as follows: John Tigue (1816), Ann E. (1818), William Archer (1820), James W. (1822), Thomas R. (1824), Mary W. (1826), and Martha N. (1828).

William Russell Hatchett and wife Mary are in Caswell Co., NC, for the 1850 census. With them at that time are 4 of their children: Thomas R.(1824), Clarinda F.(1834), Elizabeth A.(1836), and Allen L.(1838). All of the children were born in VA.
