      Eunice Odell Neal Harrelson (1921-2011)

"Jesus said unto her, 'I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?'" John 11:25-26 KJV. Eunice Odell Neal Harrelson was born May 8, 1921 in Providence, NC in Caswell County. She was the second child born to Walter Luther Neal and Sarah Lizzie Ware Neal. Eunice spent her childhood in Providence where she attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse. She later attended and graduated from Cobb Memorial High School where she met the love of her life, JC Harrelson. They eloped on February 12, 1937 and were married in Leaksville, NC. Eunice and JC were employed for many years at American Tobacco Co. in Reidsville, NC. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 19 at Riverside Health Care and Rehab in Danville, where she had resided since January 2011. Eunice was a faithful member of her church, Providence Baptist, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was a Bible teacher and storyteller in Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed storytelling and writing stories.

Throughout her life, Eunice had a strong interest in learning, especially in history and writing, and provided her children and grandchildren with many opportunities to learn through example, reading, and road trips to educational and historic sites. She loved to write, especially about her childhood life in Caswell County. She shared these stories with her family and others. She served for a time as a columnist for The Caswell Messenger in Yanceyville and for other publications. After retirement, she again followed her quest for learning through traveling to many distant places with her husband, and often in the company of their close friends, Catherine and the late Rev. Charles Jenkins of Richmond. She traveled to many locations including New Mexico, Bermuda, and Canada. After her husband's death, she continued to travel with friends and family to such places as the Missouri Ozarks and New England.

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents and husband; a sister and two brothers, Ophelia Neal Yarbrough Haymore, Henry Thomas Neal, and Luther Allen Neal. She is survived by her daughters, Janice H. Poteat and Judith H. Lawson of Providence, NC; and her son, Mark Harrelson of Danville, VA; in-laws whom she loved as her own children, son-in-law Charlie Poteat and daughter-in-law Shelly Harrelson. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Kenneth Lawson and wife, Darla; Joseph Lawson and wife, Connie; Donald Lawson and wife, Jerald; Stacey Poteat Clayton and husband, Danny; Jennifer Harrelson; and Benjamin S. Harrelson and wife, Sherri. Surviving are also five great-grandchildren; Joshua Lawson, Taylor Lawson, Lillian Lawson, JC Lawson, and Benjamin J. Harrelson; four step-great-grandchildren; Leah Clayton Durham, Joshua Clayton, Savana Rain Harrelson, and Mary Kate Welch; and one step-great-great-grandson, Konner Durham. Surviving also are many dearly loved friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral was held at Harrelson Funeral Home in Yanceyville at 2 p.m. Tuesday with private interment Thursday. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Harrelson Funeral Service is assisting the family.
