_______________
Second photogarph: Jerry Parks Cooper and Herman Paul Smith. "What I remember most about this photo and the occasion, is that Paul and I were in coats and ties because we had a case for trial in court, and even after we had testified, the D.A. would not let us leave until it was completed. While the trial was proceeding, an informant began tailing the truck from a stash in Franklin County VA. It was loaded with 250 gallons of moonshine. This was in the days before common cell phone usage. So, every time the truck would stop to unload some of the product, the informant would run to a pay phone and call the Clerk of Court's office, where someone would come into the courtroom to tell me where the truck was last seen. This went on for hours. We were released from court just as the truck entered NC. By the time we caught up with the truck, the driver had unloaded all but 26 gallons." _______________
Herman Paul Smith (1922-1990) was a Caswell County Alcoholic Beverage Control officer. It appears that these ABC officers were paid from tax receipts collected by the ABC stores in the county, which also provided funds to county schools and to the general county fund. Caswell County was "dry" until 1953.

Herman Paul Smith who became the Caswell County Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Officer, once told me his father actually died while conducting surveillance of a moonshine still. Source: Jerry Parks Cooper 18 September 2018 comment to the Caswell County Historical Association Facebook Page.
You are correct Jerry, Herman is my grandfather and I’ve been told of that fatal day by my dad Billy Smith. He said that he would chase bootleggers on foot by night and scout out for stills by day. I remember when I was working with the Sheriff's Department and Keith McKinney and Paul Smith were disposing of some of there find and I was standing close to them and they both told me not to get too close, it was a good way to get high. Loved working with the Sheriff's Department. Best job ever. Source: Judy Shelton Williamson October 31, 2018 Post to Caswell County Historical Association Facebook Page.
