Mary Elizabeth Barrett Woodard passed away peacefully at her home Friday January 18, 2013.Funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Pam Gillian on Sunday January 20 at 3:00 p.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church in West Yanceyville, N.C. Interment will follow in the church cemetery and visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately after. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Prospect United Methodist Church or Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell. Harrelson Funeral Service is assisting the Woodard family with arrangements and condolences may be made at www.harrelsonfs.com.
Mrs. Woodard was born in Farmville, N.C. on May 14, 1925 and was the daughter of the late John and Mary Barrett. She graduated from high school in 1942 and attended Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C. It was the setting for meeting and marrying her beloved husband, Walker Willard Woodard. Mrs. Woodard served as a secretary for Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson, N.C. She was an active Girl Scout leader and a Red Cross volunteer for many years. She worked as a secretary for the First Baptist Church in Selma, N.C. Teaching an adult Sunday School class and singing in the choir at Prospect United Methodist Church in Yanceyville were highlights in her life. Mrs. Woodard was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and a supporter of education. She volunteered as a tutor for students at Schoolfield Elementary in Danville, Virginia for many years. Her passion for life and helping others was an ongoing ambition. She gave of herself unconditionally and never knew a stranger.
Mrs. Woodard is survived by her husband of 67 years, Will Woodard, and two children: son Robert S. Woodard and his wife Melanie of Greensboro, N.C., daughter Ann W. Shelton and her husband Jeff of Danville, Virginia; seven grandchildren: Seth Woodard and his wife Gina, Schaum Woodard, Sarah Hooker and her husband Bryan, Troy and Ryan Shelton and Thomas and Melissa Byrd; two great grandchildren: Dylan Shelton and Henry Hooker: One sister, Sybil Warren and her husband Wallace. She was predeceased by her mother Mary Forbes Barrett, father John R. Barrett, and one brother, Johnny Barrett.
