_______________
George Spears Smith (1868-1927) and Elijah Johnson Moorefield (1868-1937) owned adjoining farms in Purley, Caswell County, North Carolina. When the properties were finally surveyed, Elijah Johnson Moorefield boasted that he got the better of the survey, ending up with more land. However, George Spears Smith may have bested his neighbor. He told his descendants: "I carried the chain."

In 1900 George Spears Smith was the head of a household in Yanceyville Township, Caswell County, North Carolina. The 1900 US Census shows just below the entry for George S. Smith an entry for his brother, Willie G. Smith (and Willie's wife Mollie, and two daughters, Edna and Mary).
Ada F. Adkins Smith had had four children at the time of the 1900 US Census, but only three survived. She had been married nine years. George Spears Smith, Jr., probably was the child that did not survive. He was burned when young and died as result of the burns. See the separate entry for him.

Note that the 1910 US Census record shown above has the George Spears Smith family living on the Mebane Road in Caswell County (but still in the Yanceyville Township). If this is the road that leads from Yanceyville to Mebane it would be Highway 62. This is, however, unconfirmed. If the family did indeed live on Highway 62 it would indicate that the move to Purley came after the 1910 census was enumerated. See the 1920 census results below, which shows the family in Dan River Township, which includes Purley.
Note that in a cemetery in Asheville, North Carolina, the following is found:
Spears, Little Georgie
Inf son of G. T. and J. C. Spears
Aged 7m, 6d
Newton Academy Cemetery, Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, corner of Biltmore Ave. and Unadilla Ave.,
Asheville, NC. An old cemetery with much wear on the stones. Established 1818.
The middle name Spears probably came from the family into which the aunt of George Spears Smith, Jane Cordelia Smith (sister of Jesse Siler Smith), married. On 15 April 1857 she married George Thomas Spears. Little Georgie Spears was their son.
