Obituary of Anne Watkins Pemberton
Yanceyville, NC - Anne Watkins Pemberton, age 90, of 192 Pemberton Street, Yanceyville, N.C., died peacefully in her sleep, on May 4, 2006.
She was born May 23, 1916, in Roxboro, North Carolina, daughter of the late William Cobb Watkins and Emily Nelson Watkins. In 1937, Ms. Pemberton was a graduate of UNC-Greensboro. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Clarence L. Pemberton, a lawyer and county Judge in Yanceyville, North Carolina.
Since 1940, Anne Pemberton has been an active member of the Yanceyville community. Ms. Pemberton, along with her husband, was a founder of St. Lukes' Episcopal Church where she was a member for decades before joining the Yanceyville Presbyterian Church. Since 1999, she has served as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church.
During the 40's and 50's, she was a leader of the Yanceyville Girl Scout Brownie Troop and an active parent volunteer in the school system where she organized the first library in Bartlett Yancey Elementary School. She was a charter member of the Caswell County Historical Society and the Yanceyville Garden Club, which supervised community projects including the plantings on the square and around the Bartlett Yancey Senior High School. She was president and a member of the board of directors of the Caswell County American Cancer Society. Ms. Pemberton was appointed by the board of the Katherine Reynolds Scholarship Foundation at UNCG to serve as both district and county chairperson responsible for selecting applicants and awarding scholarships. She also served as a tax advisor in the Pemberton law firm.
Ms. Pemberton is survived by her three daughters and their families: Mary Norcott Pemberton of Branford, Connecticut; Elizabeth Nelson Pemberton and her husband Richard Lewis of Washington, DC; and Emaly Pemberton Simone and husband Richard Simone of Middletown, Connecticut. She is also survived by her four grandchildren and their families: Nathaniel Pemberton Zee and wife, Stacey Zee; Landon Zee and wife Megan Lamb; Emaly Nelson Simone, husband Anthony Letourneau, and son Henry Amedee Letourneau; and William Simone.
The family received friends at the residence from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2006.
A memorial service was conducted at the Yanceyville Presbyterian Church, by Rev. Marie Reed & Harold McElroy Monday, May 8, 2006.
"Ms. Pem," who is known for her love and protection of animals, requests that any memorial be made to the Animal Protection Society of Northern Piedmont (Box 193, Yanceyville, N.C. 27379).
Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C. is in charge of arrangements.

_______________
I believe I understand why a member of the Watkins family (Anne Elizabeth Watkins) recalled a John Bullock as the partner of William Cobb Watkins in the Roxboro building supply business of "Watkins & Bullock." The elder William Cobb Bullock (1827-1873) has a son named John Bullock (1855-1928). Census records show this John Bullock to be a "Lumberman." And this John Bullock has a son named William Cobb Bullock (1888-1944) who stated his occupation as "Retail Lumberman" in Roxboro, North Carolina.
So, which W. C. Bullock was the original partner in the W. C. Watkins and W. C. Bullock Roxboro building supply business?
And to complicate matters, the mother of William Cobb Watkins (1877-1932) is Anne Chesley Bullock (1853-1939), and his paternal grandmother is Anne Elizabeth Bullock (1833-1913)! Thus the Bullock and Watkins families of Roxboro are closely related.
_______________
Footnote: The younger William Cobb Bullock (1888-1944) married Nannie Cabell Moore, and they had at least three children: Nancy Cabell Bullock (1916-2014); Carr Moore Bullock (1919-2001); and William Cobb Bullock, Jr. (1921-1944 -- killed in World War II).
