Like his father, Ephraim Henry Harding became a Presbyterian minister and served the Milton Church (Caswell County, North Carolina) before going to Charlotte, North Carolina, to be the first pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church (which later merged with another Presbyterian Church (c. 1950) to become Covenant Presbyterian, one of the largest Presbyterian Churches in North Carolina). _______________

Envelope addressed to Rev. Ephraim H. Harding, Black Walnut, Halifax County, Virginia

Ephraim Henry Harding was ordained 8 Jul 1859. And, the 1860 United States Federal Census may suggest his first assignment was in Halifax County, VA. Moreover, as the envelope is addressed to “Rev.” Ephraim H. Harding, does this date it after 18 July 1859? And, query whether Harding was actually residing at Black Walnut or whether that was just a postal address. Such a large estate may have had a general store that functioned as a post office. Ephraim Henry Harding is buried in the Davidson College Cemetery, Davidson, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

      _______________

Evidence that the Confederate Marine battalion based at "Camp Beall," Drewry's Bluff, had received gray clothing from the Army QM department in Richmond by the fall of 1862 is found in a letter written by Ephraim Henry Harding, chaplain of the 45th Regt, North Carolina State Troops, to his wife Mary on September 2, 1862. Having been asked to officiate at the funeral of 1st Sgt Jacob Scholls, he wrote, "The scene was both novel and impressive. The marines some two or three companies were all dressed in white trousers & grey coats . . ."

      Their Golden Wedding Celebrated

Milton, N.C., Jan. 20 [1909] -- Rev. E. H. Harding, the Presbyterian pastor at this place, and his beloved wife, Mrs. Mary Richmond Harding, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary here today. Their son, Dr. Richmond Harding, of Davidson College, and his daughter, Miss Mary R. Harding, Mrs. W. J. Montgomery, of Concord, and Dr. Henry Harding Dodson, of Greensboro, were among the relatives who came to honor the auspicious day with them. Many good gifts were sent by friends.

The three churches under Dr. Harding's pastoral care, Red House, Gilead, and Milton, sent a generous offering in gold, which was presented at the door of the manse this morning by a sweet little girl, Amelia Lankford, on a silver waiter filled with fresh violets, white carnations and maiden hair ferns, with a card expressing their loving loyalty and devotion, and in grateful recognition of his faithfulness and love to them.

Dr. Harding, at seventy years of age, continues to preach the gospel with great spiritual power, pathos and beauty. All denominations delight to hear and honor him.
