Budge Hatchett's Tree on Old Highway 86 North of Yanceyville, NC
Not only did "Budge" sit under his tree and wave to those passing, he also sold lamps made from popsicle sticks. The tree was removed to improve highway safety, as it was the scene of several accidents.

Budge's Tree
"The late Budge Hatchett used to relax and wave at the motorists passing the big White Oak tree on Old NC 86 located near Hines Hatchett Road. Budge worked for Clover Dairy of Yanceyville when they occupied the lot where Swann's Machinery is now located. Budge passed away around 1980 [1981]. He had three brothers and a sister, Paul Hatchett of New York City, Hines Hatchett of Purley, Siddle Hatchett of Newport News and sister, Marion Hatchett Fitch of Caswell County."
Newspaper source is unknown, but "Budge" Hatchett died in 1981, which helps establish the date of publication.
He is a son of William Wallace Hatchett (1859-1939) and Virginia Elizabeth Siddle (1873-1938). His siblings are:

I remember him [Wilson Wallace (Budge) Hatchett] very well! My grandfather David [Lanier] Stowe, talked with him often. My grandfather was a deacon at Community Baptist church and he would tell him every time he saw him "David, I've been out with a rough crowd." To which my grandfather would reply, "Oh Budge, you don't mean it!" He would say, "I have David." Then my Grandfather would tell him I will sure pray for you Budge! I thought he was called Butch. Thanks for the correction. He once tried diligently to "straighten me out." He frequently attended court sessions in the historic courthouse on the Square. At some point in the 70s when I was writing for The [Caswell] Messenger, I was assigned to cover a particular proceeding. I entered the courtroom and took my seat on the right (as one was facing the judge.). Almost as soon as I was seated, Budge came forward and whispered to me that I must move to the other side because I was sitting on the 'colored side." I assured him that I was just fine where I was because I was close enough to hear everything. He did his best to convince me to move, but I refused. He finally retreated but I could tell he was a bit put out with me.
