_______________
Elijah Johnson (John) Moorefield and Ada Belle James lived in Person County, North Carolina, until around 1911 when they moved to Yanceyville, North Carolina. Eventually, they purchased a substantial farm in the Purley community of Caswell County very near the Purley United Methodist Church. How Elijah Johnson Moorefield went from being a farm laborer living in rented property in 1900 to a substantial land owner in Purley, North Carolina, is unknown. Elijah sometimes is incorrectly seen as Elija or Eliga.
_______________
George Spears Smith (1868-1927) and Elijah Johnson Moorefield (1868-1937) owned adjoining farms in Purley, Caswell County, North Carolina. When the properties were finally surveyed, Elijah Johnson Moorefield boasted that he got the better of the survey, ending up with more land. However, George Spears Smith may have bested his neighbor. He told his descendants: "I carried the chain."

Family Bible Record

The records relating to the birth date of Elijah Johnson Moorefield are confusing, showing him born: 1868; or Jan 1860; or Jan 1868; or c.Oct 1867. However, his head stone in the cemetery of the First Baptist Church in Yanceyville, North Carolina, gives the following: 1868-1937. LDS records show an Elijah Johnson Moorefield born 17 Oct 1868 in Virginia or North Carolina and died 13 Dec 1937. Father: Joseph Moorefield. Mother: Ann Eliza Redd. The possible Virginia birth place is Daneville, Caladonia, Virginia. Those records also show this Elijah Johnson Moorefield married Ada B. James on 18 February 1891. This is sufficient cross reference to give the record facial reliability. The only remaining concern is the spelling of Moorefield as Moorehead, which is not a major issue given the other corroborating facts. Accordingly, until more is uncovered, his life years are assumed to be 17 October 1868 to 13 December 1937.
Elijah Johnson Moorefield apparently served during World War I in Company Fifty-One, North Carolina Reserve Militia. Caswell County in the World War, 1917-1918: Service Records of Caswell County Men, George A. Anderson, Compiler (1921) at 24 (where he is listed as J. E. Moorefield).

Other records indicated they were born in Halifax County, Virginia.
