Yanceyville, N.C. -- Bobby Poteat took the oath of office Monday as Caswell County's new sheriff and announced the appointment of five deputies. The new deputies are Sam Hamlett, Teddy Willis, Harold Meeler, Ed Gwynn, and Lewis Satterfield. All but Hamlett have served as deputies in the past. Both Willis and Gwynn already were deputies when Poteat took over. Poteat, a deputy himself for over seven years until he resigned early this year to run for office, defeated incumbent Frank Daniel in the May Democratic primary.
Although never before a deputy, Hamlett is not without prior law enforcement experience. He has been constable in Pelham Township for the past 10 years.
Willis has been with the sheriff's department on a parttime basis for the past three years. He became a fulltime deputy a year ago. He also has served as the Milton town officer.
Gwynn, the first Negro to serve as a deputy sheriff in Caswell County in this century, was appointed by Daniel two years ago to work on a parttime basis. Under Poteat he will become a fulltime deputy.
Meeler, from Leasburg, served as a deputy for about one month last year. He has been farming since.
Satterfield, whose primary responsibility will be jailor and dispatcher, served under Daniel in this capacity until about two years ago when he was released following a disagreement.
