_______________
Name Confusion
His name is believed to be Leondas or Leonidas. See the discussion below. The search for the correct spelling of "Leondas" and for his correct death date was arduous. However, both were resolved by his gravestone in Burchwood Cemetery, Roxboro, North Carolina:
Gravestone Photograph
Until the gravestone was found, researchers knew that he lived at least until 14 June 1931. Newspaper accounts of the death of his son William Waters Frederick in 1931 indicated that L. P. Frederick was still alive. William Waters Frederick Obituary
L. P. was once thought to be Luther, Lutter, Leondras, Leander, Leardoor, and Leanders, among others. The various census takers had a field day with his name. In the 1910 US Census is Luther P. Frederick born in Roxboro Township 1855. Although difficult to read, the family included wife is Dovie, son Nick, daughter Bessie, and daughter Mary. While the names of family members were correct, the name of L. P. remained uncertain. L. P. also could have been Leardon P. Frederick (also given as Fedrick), shown in the 1860 US Census as the son of Ransom and Joanna Frederick. He was five years old at the time, so would have be born around 1855. This also was the correct person, but "Leardon" appeared to be less likely than Leondras, which also proved incorrect. The 1930 US Census clearly shows "Leondious" as L. P. The surname is spelled "Fredrick". Even though this is the correct person and the census enumerator carefully spelled out "Leondious", that name remained questionable. Thus, until the gravestone was found, Leondras was the preferred name. This 1930 US Census entry is found in the household of John N. Frederick. This is John Nicholas (Nick) Frederick. L. P. was shown as 75 years old and 23 when first married. Nick's son Leon was named for his grandfather: Leonidas Pointer Frederick.
Note, however, that the North Carolina Standard Certificate of Death shown below gives his name as Leonidas Pointer Frederick. Thus, uncertainty remains. Note that he had brothers named Cicero and Arasmus, both classical appellations and giving some support to Leonidas (a king of Sparta).
L. P. may have been called Uncle Lonnie (and Uncle Landis) by some during his later years. Source: ACR. He may have been called Lea as a boy.
The source of the Pointer middle name is unknown. The only relevant record found is the 1880 U. S. Census (Roxboro, Person County, North Carolina) where he is listed as "Pointer." Note that the gravestone only shows "Leondas P. Frederick". Is it possible that the middle name is Painter?
In an article from "The Heritage of Person County, Vol. 1" North Carolina, William Ingram Painter is shown to be born in 1845, and died in 1900. He was married to Martha Jane McCollum. His father was said to be Martin Painter, born about 1802 in North Carolina, who married Sarah Fredrick, born about 1803 in NC. Martin and Elizabeth were married August 20, 1823 in Person County, NC. Martin was a member of the Flat River Baptist Church, baptized in 1824. Martin was dismissed from the church in 1846, and does not appear in the 1850 Census of Person Co., NC. They were said to have eft NC for Alabama around 1850. Five other children (in addition to William I.), went to Alabama with them, Martin Harold (born Aug. 1828, died Mar. 1899), married Ann Wilks in Person Co., NC; Mary (born 1831); Lewis E. (born Jan. 19, 1833), married Mary L. Wilks; Elizabeth S. (born 1837); Sarah (born 1839); and Eli (born 1844).
There also is an Alfred Panter who married a Sallie Frederick (North Carolina death certificate of their son, Salomon P. Panter (1845-1913).

Family Reunion 1916
On Sunday, August 20th, there was a family reunion held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Federick. They have eight children but only three are at home. Mr. J. W., Miss Meadie and Master Daily Federick, Mr. W. W. Frederick from Warren's Grove, Mrs. L. E. Hardy, Jr. from Reidsville, Mr. J. N. Federick, Roxboro; Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Pittard, Cedar Grove; and Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Long, Prospect Hill. A cousin of the family, Mrs. B. C. Hardy of Oriental was present. A fine dinner was prepared which everyone enjoyed. During the day there were sixty people in and out. Mr. Oakley from Roxboro came out to take a picture of the family group. It was a pleasant day to be with all the loved ones once again. All went home feeling that they had spent a very happy day. God bless the old people who were so happy to have all their children with them once more.--X

Farm Location
The following is from The Heritage of Person County, Volume I, Madeline Hall Eaker, Editor (1981) at 232-233 (Article #492 "The Charlie Louis and Nannie Whitt Foushee Family" by Christine F. Wade):
About 1921 he [Charlie Louis Foushee] bought a small farm from S. J. Dickens across the road from the L. P. Frederick farm, about two and half miles from Roxboro on Leasburg Road. Later he bought another farm joining this, known as Winstead's farm. Both farms totaled one hundred acres and this is where they lived and farmed the remainder of their lives.
_______________
Children
Based upon the obituary of William W. Frederick in 1931, Leondas and Dover at least had the following children:
1. W. W. Frederick (William Waters (Willie) Frederick)
2. J. N. Frederick (John Nicholas (Nick) Frederick)
3. Nash Frederick (Jessie Nash Frederick)
4. Daily Frederick (Dailey Fisher Frederick)
5. Mrs. L. H. Hardy (Minnie Frederick, Reidsville)
6. Mrs. Jule Long ( Maye Fannie Frederick, Prospect Hill)
7. Mrs. John Jackson (Meadie Frederick, Durham)
Note that in one or more census accounts Dover reported having eight children of which seven survived. This eighth child was Elizabeth Catherine Frederick, who died in 1918. She actually had nine children.
Leondas and Dover are thought to have been married in 1878. The 1880 US Census shows them married and living in the household of Ransom and Joanah Fedrick, with no children listed. Unfortunately, the 1890 US Census records were destroyed in a 1921 fire before being compiled.
The 1900 US Census shows six children. The seventh and last apparently was born in 1901 and most likely is Dailey.
Note that the 1920 US Census shows Elizabeth Pittard as a 76-year-old sister, Dovie E. Pittard as a four-year-old grand daughter, and Arasmus M. Fedrick as a two-year-old grand son. Leondas Pointer Frederick had a brother named Arasmus D. Frederick. Was this Arasmus M. Fedrick named for his uncle or for his father?

It appears that LP and Dover had been married for 30 years at the time of this census, which is consistent with a marriage date of 1878 given the accuracy vel non of census and marriage records of the time. All were literate. LP owned his farm. He and Nick were in the business of general farming. All spoke English and all were born in NC as were their parents.
