_______________
At age 79 he defended Mack Ingram in the famous 1951 Caswell County trial. See: Mack Ingram Trial.
He also was related to Avery Upchurch, past Mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina.Avery C. Upchurch (December 22, 1928 - June 30, 1994) was Mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina from 1983 to 1993. His term in office was the longest of any mayor of Raleigh in the 20th century and corresponded to a period of rapid growth of the city. Upchurch was born in Wake County, North Carolina and moved to Raleigh as a teenager. He operated two filling stations in the city before entering politics. Having served on the Planning Commission and on City Council prior to election as Mayor, his administration focused on expansion of infrastructure. He was noted for his unpretentious style and his consensus approach to problem solving. Upchurch elected not to run for a sixth term. Within months of retiring from office, he contracted cancer and died. The headquarters of Raleigh city government was subsequently renamed the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex in his honor.

The first library I remember in Yanceyville was in the basement of the Agriculture Building, and sponsored by the Home Extension ( I think). My sister, Ella Ray Bradsher Chacey, was secretary to Mr. E. F. Upchurch at the time (late 1930's), lived with the Upchurch family during the week and when she came home to Milton on week-ends she came laden with books for me. First, and probably most appreciated library in my life. Source: Jean Bradsher Scott Comment Posted 2 February 2014 to the Caswell County Historical Association Facebook Page.

Oyster Suppers at Upchurch's Cabin
This was the cabin near Stoney Creek (Reidsville Lake) owned by Ernest Frederick Upchurch, Sr., prominent Yanceyville lawyer. Many "cook-outs" were held there, usually attended by those who spent their days in and around the Caswell County Courthouse (judges, lawyers, clerk's office staff, and sheriff's office staff). The day before the outing a horse-drawn wagon would transport to the cabin the necessaries for the event. Then, the wagon would be overturned to be used as a platform for the festivities (either as a table or upon which to sit).
Source not documented but believed to be Thomas J. (Tom) Henderson. An Upchurch descendant shared that Norman Stroupe Upchurch, eledst son of Ernest Frederick Upchurch, often drove the wagon.

Once, Judge Charles M. Cooke told Yanceyville lawyer Frederick Upchurch: "I know more law when I'm sleep than you when you're awake."
