- His 129 1/2-acre tract of land (in both Caswell and Pittsylvania Counties) was sold by executors E. L. and J. W. Coleman at public auction on 25 July 1896 to Thomas J. Coleman. Wm. D. Coleman bought the land from J. A. Pierce in Jan. 1878. On 10 July 1897, Thomas J. Coleman sold 79 acres in Caswell to J. A. Fitzgerald.
Around 1874, the land for the State Line Baptist Church (Pelham, North Carolina) and a one room building was donated by William D. Coleman, great uncle of Kenneth, Herbert, Grace, and Bertie Coleman. In 1924, the church moved to Stokesland, Virginia, and changed its name to Stokesland Baptist Church. One lot was purchased, and another was donated in 1925 by Mrs. Ella Coleman Gatewood, aunt of the Coleman's.

The Roanoke Daily Times, November 08, 1895, Page 8, Image 8, An Old Man Suicides, Danville, Va , Nov. 7 (1895): Wm. D. Coleman, 79 years old,committed suicide by shooting himself with a gun this morning near Stokesland, about five miles from Danville.

(1) William D. Coleman (abt 1817-1819) married Alice Astin (abt 1824-1826). They married 10 Dec 1840 in Pittsylvania Co., VA.
In Caswell Co. Will Book T, p. 210, January Court 1867, there is a record of the sale of property of Mrs. Ann P. Asten, decd, sold by W. D. Coleman adm on 8 June 1866 to W. D. Coleman, George Yates, Milton Voss, Wm D. Coleman, Saml Hardy. One bond on A. K. Pinnix given 1858, one on Thomas D. Harrison 1858 doubtful. A.K. Pinnix and Thomas D. Harrison were married to neices of Anne Payne Harrison, who was married to William Astin.
Mrs. Ann P. Asten may be Anne Payne Harrison who married William Astin 23 Oct 1818 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Only one child for them, an Ann Astin, b. abt 1819 who married Christopher Robertson in Pittsylvania Co, VA. I suspect they had other children, and that this Alice is one of them. William Astin's grandmother was named "Alicey", supposedly.
Anne Payne Harrison was sister of Charles P. Harrison. Charles P. was father of Harriet who married A.K. Pinnix and Virginia Caroline who married Thomas D. Harrison, as well as my Maria Louise who married John Kelly Fulton. Thomas D. Harrison died after 04 Dec 1855 when he sold land to A. K. Pinnix and before 14 Apr 1867 when Virginia Caroline, as a widow, married a brother of John Kelly Fulton. That might explain his being "doubtful" above??
The 1850 Census of Caswell Co. lists William Coleman (32), Arley (26), Thomas (10), Robert (5), Geo. W. (3), and Susan A. (1).
In the 1860 Census of Caswell Co., NC, they are listed as W.D. Coleman (43), A. (34), T. (18), Robert (14), George (12), S. (11), Joel (9), John (7), Alice (5), S. P. (3), and M. S. (1).
In the 1870 Census, they are listed as William (52), Alice (44), Robert (24), Susan (20), John (14), Mary (14), Peter (12), Martha (10), Lavinia (8), Thomas (7), James (5), and Edward (1).
In the 1880 Census, they are listed as W.D. (61), Alice (56), Susan A. (29), John W. (27), Alice Beck (25), S. Peter (23), Martha A. (21), Lavinia J. (19), Thomas J. (17), Willie J. (15), Eddie Lee (11), and Willie R. Beck (3).

(j) Lavinia J. Coleman (Dec 1861). The 1900 Census of Caswell Co., NC, lists Respess Beck (23, b. Dec 1876) as head of household, with his mother Mary A. Beck (45, b. Mar 1855). His aunt Lou J. Coleman (38, b. Dec 1861) and his cousin Johnie W. Coleman (8, b. Sep 1891).
