The 1850 US Census (Yanceyville, Caswell County, North Carolina) has a 15-year-old Calvin Lea living in the Josiah Rucks household (probably a hotel or boarding house) and shown as a student (born in Caswell County). Whether these are the same people remains unconfirmed. The 1850 census record set forth below casts doubt, but it possible he was enumerated twice. Consider also that the 15-year-old student living in the Josiah Rucks household in 1850 was Calvin D. Lea, who also became a physician.

Lea, Calvin Graves, Private. Resided in Caswell County and was by occupation a "physic" prior to enlisting in Caswell County at age 26, April 29, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded and captured at South Mountain, Maryland, September 14, 1862. Paroled and exchanged on or about October 3, 1862. Reported absent wounded until discharged on May 15, 1863, by reason of wounds received at South Mountain.
