    • William Stamps Howard was born in Tarboro, Edgecombe Co, NC, the 5th of 6 known children born to Judge George A. Howard and Anna Ragland Stamps. He was grandson of George Howard I and Alice Thurston Clark who arrived in Edgecombe County around 1828. Born into the prominent Howard family, he was a graduate of UNC and became a lawyer and businessman in Tarboro. He served as County Attorney (1905-07); State Senator (1907-1909), and Trustee of UNC (1909-).

      He married Mary McPherson (MacPherson)Ferebee of Granville County, daughter of Dr. Nelson McPherson Ferebee and Margaret Thweatt Gregory, in 1901 when he was 29 and she 23. They raised a family of 3 sons and and daughter: William Stamps Howard, Jr. (1902); Nelson Ferebee Howard (1906); Ronnagan Howard (1912) and Mary Ferebee Howard (1913). The family were active Presbyterians.

      Stamps died in 1954 at age 79.
