  • Notes
    • Iverson Lewis (1741-1815)

      Baptist minister.

Ann Lewis is the daughter of Rev. Iverson Lewis and Frances Bird/Byrd. Her sister Frances Byrd Lewis was a wife of Solomon Graves. All of this is in the database except someone has posted a Post’em expressing doubts about these relationships saying that Rev. Iverson Lewis was always in King & Queen Co and did not live near the Brookes or Graves. However, it appears that he was in Gloucester County later Mathews County, and would have been acquainted. The following is from a webpage that is no longer available:

Iverson Lewis from Lewisville in King & Queen Co was converted out of the Anglican Church, Stratton Major Parish to the Separate Baptists. John Waller, pastor of the Lower Spotsylvania Church was preaching in adjacent Middlesex Co in 1770 and periodically visited in King & Queen Co. Iverson went to hear him and was converted and baptized about 1771, possibly by Waller himself. Waller may have been a brother of Iverson's aunt-by-marriage, Mary Waller who had married Zachary Lewis Jr.

Iverson Lewis continued to live in Lewisville but he pastored and planted churches in King & Queen, Middlesex & Gloucester County. In Gloucester he started churches in three of its four parishes. Lewisville is located between Exol and Dragon Run Swamps and is where the Exol Baptist Church was organized in 1775 by John Waller with thirty members. Iverson Lewis was the first pastor and continued until his death. Iverson was married three times and had children by each marriage.
