      _______________

His 1848 home in Yanceyville was transformed into the White Apartments.

However, Ruth Little, then Little-Stokes, showed little interest in this building. Here is her description:

"H. S. Turner-White Apartment ca.1840. 2-story Greek Revival style house, one of a group found in the district, which was overbuilt ca. 1930 as an International Style apartment house."

The H. S. Turner to whom she refers has not been identified.

      Yanceyville Doctors: Special Relationship

We have been discussing Yanceyville's medical doctors and asked about a non-medical link among/between three of them: Stephen Arnold Malloy (1872-1944); William Oliver Spencer (1863-1938); and Albert Galatin Yancey (1817-1887). There is no evidence that any of these practiced together, and only Dr. Yancey is a Caswell County native.

Drs. Malloy and Spencer married sisters (Nannie Emma Kerr and Mary Graves Miles Kerr, respectively). The maternal grandfather of these sisters is, you guessed it, Dr. Albert G. Yancey.

Footnote: A third sister, Martha Frances Kerr, married Milton and Yanceyville merchant Alexander Hamilton Motz (1885-1973). His building on the Square in Yanceyville still stands.

The Heritage of Caswell County, North Carolina - 1985
      [Entry number] 836

Dr. Albert Galatin Yancey was born September 8, 1817, the second son of James Yancey and Zilpah Johnston Yancey. The Yancey home was about 5 miles south of Yanceyville. His father died in 1829 when he was only 12 years of age. His mother served as his guardian. Dr. Yancey was a grandson of Bartlett Yancey Sr. and Ann Graves Yancey. Following in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather, Dr. Lancelot Johnston, Caswell's first surgeon, he pursued the study of medicine. He attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia [University of Pennsylvania].

Dr. Yancey was a great grandson of James Yancey of Granville Co., of John Graves (Sr.) who settled in Orange, now Caswell about 1752 coming from Spotsylvania Go. VA, and of Thomas Rice Esq. who had migrated from Hanover Co. VA.

After his medical education he returned to Yanceyville and entered medical practice with Dr. N. M. Roan. He married 1843 Mary Graves Miles (a 2nd cousin) and in 1848 they built their home on Main St. in Yanceyville across from the home of his in-laws the Abner Miles'. His home is now the front older section of the White Apartments. He built a medical office in his yard and practiced independently. A member of the Baptist Church, the minutes show Dr. Yancey was a deacon and usually in attendance at the monthly sessions.

In the 1930's the house of Albert Galatin Yancey and Mary Graves Miles was converted to an art deco apartment building of six units (White Apartments). See: Yanceyville Historic District Walking Tour

Many probate records of Caswell County show medical bills paid to Dr. Yancey indicating a large practice. He was county coroner and had the tasks of holding inquests over the bodies of John Stephens after his courthouse murder, also over the body of Stephen's mother. He testified at both trials. He and his daughter Eliza Catherine attended the funeral of Stephens at the Methodist Church.

Dr. Yancey died in August 1887. His wife Mary lived until February 7, 1898. Interments were at Yanceyville Baptist cemetery.

The Yanceys were parents of six children namely: Emma Yancey was unmarried and died young; Eliza Catherine Yancey married 1870 John Hosea McNeill Kerr (see article on them); William Judson Yancey married Beulah Strother of Wake County and resided in Raleigh having two daughters; Mary Yancey married Dr. Palmer of Halifax Co. VA and they resided near Turbeville having no issue; Annie E. Yancey married Howard Cobb and resided in Danville, VA, and there were two children Clyde who married Howard Davidson of Atlanta and Palmer Cobb who died a young man; Albert Galatin Yancey Jr. married Mary Bell Graves (daughter of Elijah Graves II) and they had one daughter Virginia Swepson Yancey who was unmarried.

See: 1850 US Census (Yanceyville, Caswell County, North Carolina), which shows him owning real estate valued at $1,250.

An apartment building in Yanceyville was known as the White Apartments. The structure initially was the home of Dr. Albert Galatin Yancey but was converted in the 1930's to six apartments. Whether James Ansel White owned this building is not known. However, in later years his daughter, Sally Isabelle White, owned the property. _______________

As age and infirmity had their effects on the artist [William Anderson Roberts], the number of his portraits declined. In 1874 he painted only the picture of Mrs. Bartlett Yancey [identity not established]. Between four and six each year continued through 1883, the last being that of Travis Wilson. Those of Dr. S. A. Richmond [possibly Dr. S. T. Richmond], Dr. and Mrs. A. C. Yancey [possibly Dr. Albert Galatin Yancey], and Dr. and Mrs. L. G. Henderson were charged off to doctors' bills. Many descendants of the subjects own and prize the portraits that Roberts painted.
