_______________
Giles Mebane (1809-1899)
"He graduated from the State University in 1831, in a class of fourteen, and was the last survivor, though as the writer has heard him say, he was the sick man of the class, he being feeble physically as compared with the others. He continued at Chapel Hill for some years as tutor.
"He became a lawyer and entered upon the practice of his profession which he continued actively until the close of the Civil War, when he acquired a large farm on [the] Dan River, in Caswell County, the same that had been the home and farm ["Oakland"] of his illustrious father-in-law [Bartlett Yancey], and moved to it, and engaged in farming."
The Alamance Gleaner (Graham, NC), 8 June 1899.
___________
In 1837, Giles Mebane married Mary Catherine Yancey (1817-1906), daughter of Bartlett Yancey (1785-1828). How did Giles Mebane acquire the Caswell County farm that belonged to Bartlett Yancey? Did Mary Catherine Yancey inherit the property? She was the last surviving child of Bartlett Yancey and Ann Graves Yancey (1786-1855).
