      Kerr Family: 1940 Snow

(for larger image, click on photograph)
      _______________

In January 1940 Caswell County experienced a record-setting blizzard. Snow fell heavily for almost twenty-four hours, a rarity for the region. Plows struggled to open main roads, and the local Civilian Conservation Corps camp did much of the work clearing snow around the Yanceyville Square. Radio broadcasts across the area warned motorists to avoid Caswell County as it had the most snow, and travel was difficult if not impossible. The photograph shows the Kerr family venturing from their Yanceyville house. They are (left-to-right): Eliza Katharine Kerr (1921-1997); Albert Yancey Kerr (1878-1942); Mary Frances Kerr; and George Yancey Kerr (1925-1986). The Kerr house, built around 1845, once was a hotel. _______________

The Azariah Graves Storehouse building in Yanceyville, Caswell County, North Carolina, was built by Azariah Graves (1776-1837) and was mentioned in Caswell County court minutes as early as 1829. Azariah Graves died March 1837, and his siblings were willed all his town lots. In June 1837, the brothers and sisters of Azariah Graves traded this brick storehouse to Owen McAleer for another piece of property ("storehouse containing 20 feet front and running back 32 ft."). In April 1839, McAleer purchased 10 additional feet to the east of the store lot. McAleer was a merchant and purchased a merchant's license by 1840. McAleer apparently died before 1850, and his widow deeded the building to her second husband, Thomas L. Campbell. In 1885, the building was sold at the courthouse door to G. W. Martin (believed to be George Wesley Thomas Martin (1846-1921)). In 1886, The Caswell News was published in the building by W. H. Thompson. G. W. Martin left the building to his brother, W. C. Martin (believed to be William C. Martin), who, in 1906, sold the building to A. Yancey Kerr for $300.

      _______________

At the time of the 1900 US Census (June 21) Albert Yancey Kerr (22) and his wife Willie Myers (18) were living in the household of Albert's father, John Kerr in Yanceyville, North Carolina. Albert is shown as a newspaper editor. This probably was The Caswell News [or Caswell Democrat]. This is the same Albert Yancey Kerr who purchased The Caswell News Office building (now, in 2015, Hushpuppies Restaurant) in 1906. In the 1910 US Census, Albert Yancey Kerr was described as a newspaper publisher. This provides some support for The Caswell News being published as late as 1910.

However, the 1920 US Census shows him as Post Master, apparently having abandoned the newspaper business. By the time of the 1930 US Census he was an insurance agent. But, he apparently returned to the newspaper business as the 1940 US Census gives his occupation: county newspaper editor. As the only county newspaper in 1940 was The Caswell Messenger, presumably he was working for or with Erwin Duke Stephens at that newspaper.

      Kerr-Oliver

Miss Mary Johnston Oliver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Oliver, and Albert Yancey Kerr, son of Judge and Mrs. John Kerr, of Yanceyville, were married at the Presbyterian parsonage in Henderson at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The only ones present were the bride's two sisters, Misses Susie and Ethel Oliver, Misses J. Austin, Annie Stewart, of Henderson; Sheriff W. M. Burton and Alvis Florance, of Yanceyville. After the wedding trip north, Mr. and Mrs. Kerr will be at home at Yanceyville.

      _____

Mrs. A. Y. Kerr, wife of Mr. [Albert] Yancey Kerr, editor of the Yanceyville Democrat, died Saturday afternoon at the home of her husband in Yanceyville, after a long illness. Her death was not altogether unexpected. The deceased resided in Reidsville a number of years ago and is remembered by many of our people. Beside her husband she is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Myers, of Gastonia, and three sisters. The funeral was conducted from the Yanceyville Baptist church Sunday afternoon and interment was made in the Baptist cemetery there.
