Greenville, North Carolina:
Walter Howard Smith, age 85, passed away on Wednesday morning (15 July 2015) at the Palliative Care Unit in Greenville, N.C. He was a resident of 106 Pinecrest Ct., Washington, NC. A musical concert for the celebration of life will be held for Mr. Smith at 11 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church and will be officiated by Dr. Jerry Bron, Mike Morgan organist, and Dr. Greg Barmer pianist. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Smith was born on September 17, 1929, the son of the late Jasper and Carrie Jane Smith of Pink Hill, N.C. He married Barbara Jo Clayton of Roxboro, N.C. on July 14, 1957. Mr. Smith attended Randolph Macon Military Academy in Front Royal, Va. and then N.C. State College before entering the U.S. Army where he served for two years. He then started his career with GMAC for 37 years, retiring in 1990.
Mr. Smith was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Washington, N.C. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed card games, and traveling. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Barbara of 58 years; a son, Walter Clayton Smith and wife Cindy; of Oley, Pa.; a daughter, Tracey Moody and husband John, of Midlothian, Va.; a sister, Carolyn Stroud of Pink Hill, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Josh and Paige Moody, Timothy, Christopher, Andrew and Natalie Smith of Oley, Pa. and Danielle Mautz of Jacksonville, N.C.; and one great-granddaughter, Mileena Mautz; a sister-in-law, Mona Pass of Winston-Salem; and a brother-in-law, Gail Clayton and wife Phyllis Clayton, of Roxboro, N.C. along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Howard Mark Smith, a brother, J.K. Smith of Kinston, N.C. and a sister, Martha Saunders of San Antonio, Texas.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation for Vidant Hospice of Greenville, Golden Way Caregivers of Washington, Bayada Caregivers of Greenville, Vernice Hawkins, private sitter, and Palliative Care Unit of Vidant Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2015, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial gifts be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 211 West 2nd St., Washington, NC 27889.
