- Washington L. Coleman (1827-1903)
(for larger image, click on photograph)
_______________
Civil War veteran (CSA). Caswell County in the World War, 1917-1918: Service Records of Caswell County Men, George A. Anderson, Compiler (1921) at 56-57.
Note that the North Carolina death certificate of Stephen Webster Coleman (1869-1927) states that his parents were: George J. (or D.) Coleman and Sarah Swann Coleman. The informant on the document was Birdie Coleman (believed to be a daughter of the deceased, who presumably would know the identities of her grandparents). This conflicts with Caswell County in the World War, 1917-1918: Service Records of Caswell County Men, George A. Anderson, Compiler (1921) at 56-57, which states that the father of Stephen W. Coleman was Washington L. Coleman. Actually, Washington L. Coleman was the father-in-law of Stepehn W. Coleman.
The 1880 Census of Pittsylvania Co., VA, lists Washington L. Coleman (52), wife Victoria (32), Ella (12), Ida (10), Willie N. (6), Norman (4), and Harvey (1). Census lists Victoria as born in NC and others born in VA; her parents born in NC and Washington's in VA.
