_______________
Tom Womack Poteat passed away peacefully at his home in Yanceyville, N.C. on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Tom was born in Caswell County on October 5, 1916, to the late Eddie Preston Poteat and Nettie Foster Poteat. He was married for 68 years to Edna Hunt Poteat who predeceased him in 2005. Tom loved the Lord and his church, Community Baptist. He and his wife led the music ministry there for 50+ years. Tom also served as a deacon, church treasurer, and Sunday School teacher. He was retired from Caswell Motor Company for which he was a dedicated employee for many years.
Tom is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Stephen Shumaker of Winston-Salem, NC. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Kimberly and Andrew; one brother, Norman of Providence, NC; one sister-in-law, Peggy K. Hunt of Greensboro and multiple nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Tom was pre-deceased by two brothers, Harvey and Steve Poteat and six sisters - Bessie Shelton, Ethel Shelton, Louise Shelton, Elna Blackwell, Isabella Burke and Marnie Lowe. The funeral was held Monday, April 18, 2011 at 11a.m. at Community Baptist Church with Jonathan Hamilton officiating. The family will receive friends at the church after the burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Baptist Church, 3050 Old NC Highway 86N, Yanceyville, NC 27379 and/or The Gideons International, PO Box 403810, Atlanta, GA 30384-3810.
_______________
I am thinking my Dad may have been chief for a while - When I was very young, Robert Brooks lived beside the mill that he managed, Johnny Harwood lived beside him and we lived in the house on the corner beside of Johnny. Ray McGuire's family lived across the street from us. When the fire alarm sounded in the middle of the night, all the families would gather outside to determine the direction of the fire truck - Great childhood memories:)
