_______________
With respect to the purported photograph of John W. Stanfield:
This photograph purportedly is John W. Stanfield (1789-1850).
On the back of the photograph is found:
John Washington Stanfield. It was "George" Washington Stanfield but "George" was struck through.
Grand father of Daniel O'Bryand. It was "Uncle" of Daniel O'Briant, but "Uncle" was struck through.
Father of Barbara Green Stanfield. It was "Brother" of Barbara Green Stanfield, but "Brother" was struck through.
Born 1789
Married Janey Green Stanfield Sept 25 1810
Janey born 1790
The person who annotated the reverse of the photograph is not known. Thus, the identity of the person in the photograph remains uncertain.
_______________
Initially, please be warned that most information found online and published about the Stanfield family of southern Virginia (including Halifax County) and Caswell and Person Counties, North Carolina, is highly suspect and should be approached with caution. It certainly should not be taken as fact and repeated, which is a disservice to all serious researchers.
Some secndary sources, without providing documentation, claim the John Stanfield of this entry was born February 1789 in Halifax, Virginia, and died in 1870. The 1850 census record shown below indicates that he was born c.1789 in North Carolina, and that date and location will be used here.
_______________
Note that his name may be John Washington Stanfield, but no primary source has been submitted to support that. He did name a son Washington Green Stanfield, and there apparently is a grandson named John Washington Stanfield. However, at present the only two primary sources show John W. Stanfield. See below.
Some researchers claim that John W. Stanfield was a son of Robert Stanfield and Elizabeth Lowry. This has not been confirmed, and that relationship is shown here for research purposes only. No John W. Stanfield was mentioned in the 1811 will of the Robert Stanfield who married Elizabeth [allegedly] Lowry. A son John Stanfield is listed in the will (as executor), but that person has not been identified as the John W. Stanfield of this entry.
Note also that Marmaduke Stanfield (1725-c.1801) had a son named John Stanfield who apparently would have been living around the same time as the John W. Stanfield of this entry. Thus, it is possible that Marmaduke Stanfield is the father of John W. Stanfield.
Researchers must be aware of the possibility that neither Robert Stanfield nor Marmaduke Stanfield is the father of John W. Stanfield.
_______________
The following is from The Heritage of Person County, Volume I, Madeline Hall Eaker, Editor (1981) at 294 (Article #603 "Thomas Lipscomb Family" by Ruth Wigfield Phillip). No documentation was offered for the claims made.
"About the same time that Thomas Lipscomb married Polly Sargent, another wedding occurred in Person County, that of John W. Stanfield to Janie Green on September 25, 1810. John W. Stanfield was born in 1789, one of the sons of Robert Stanfield and his wife Elizabeth Lowrey of Halifax County, Virginia. The Stanfield land was on the Virginia-North Carolina border in the Hyco area. Janie Green had inherited land on Double Creek of the Hyco from her father, Lewis Green. This land was just west of Roxboro, and in later years the Stanfields lived there. John and Janie named their eldest son Washington."
_______________
Robert Stanfield (c1755-c1811) and Elizabeth Lowry are shown as the parents of John Washington Stanfield on Jerry Richmond's Stanfield Family web site: Jerry Richmond Website. While this is a secondary source, it is a starting point.

US Census 1850 (Person County, NC): Shows John W. Stanfield (age 61, born c. 1789), married to Jane (age 60, born c. 1790). The children listed are:
Barbara (age 30, born c. 1820)
Elizabeth (age 27, born c. 1823)
Frances (age 24, born c. 1826)
William (age 21, born c. 1829)
Jerry (age 18, born c. 1832)
Here is Jerry Stanfield, shown as part of the John W. Stanfield household; presumably, he is a son. Is this the Jeremiah who married Kate Fox? No. That Jerry was a son of Lewis Garrett Stanfield and was born c. 1850.
The other children listed (Washington Green, and Lewis Garrett) would have been 39 and 36, respectively, and are assumed to have moved out of their parents' home at the time of the 1850 US Census.
Article 531 in Person County Heritage--North Carolina, Vol. II (1983) lists the children of John Washington Stanfield and Jane Green as:
Washington Green Stanfield
Lewis Garrett Stanfield
John Bunyan Stanfield
Barbara Stanfield
Frances Stanfield
Elizabeth Stanfield
Only six children are named. This list omits William Stanfield and Jerry Stanfield. Which list is correct?
The 1870 United States Census shows an Elizabeth E Stanfield age 29 in the household of Jane Stanfield. John W. Stanfield apparently had died. Some claim this Elizabeth E. Stanfield as a daughter of John W. Stanfield and Jane (Janey) Green. However, this has not been substantiated. According to that census record, the only in which she has been found, she was 29 years old, thus being born around 1841. Jane Green Stanfield would have been around 51 years old. John W. Stanfield would have been around 52 years old. While at this age having another child would not have been impossible, is it probable. Query whether this Elizabeth E. Stanfield is not a child of John W. Stanfield and Jane (Janey) Green Stanfield, but another relative of some sort.

This deed and the 1850 census are the only primary sources found that refer to the John Stanfield who married Jane Green with the middle initial W, which possibly stands for Washington. Note that the Lewis Green referred to in this deed was the father of Jane Green, possible wife of John W. Stanfield.

_______________
One Stanfield researcher believes the presence of Abraham Hargis in many of the following records provides some support for the conclusion that the John W. Stanfield of this entry is a son of Robert Stanfield and Elizabeth Lowry:
[Person - Marriage] “Stanfield, John & Janey Green, 25 Sep 1810 (Durrett Stanfield, D. C. Townes)”

A “Hargis” was always in close proximity to one of the Robert Stanfields, or to John Stanfield.
