      LEASBURG - Surrounded by his children, James Taft (Snake) Ashby passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, after several years of declining health. He was born in Leasburg on July 15, 1934, where he lived all of his life. He was the son of the late Floyd Taft Ashby and Frances Richmond Ashby. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church. He served the Caswell County Sheriff's Department as a deputy from 1955 to 1966. He served Caswell County Schools on the school board from 1972 [possibly earlier] to 1992 where he held the position of vice-chairman. His greatest joy was being the owner of Ashby's Grocery, where he served the community for 25 years.

      He was a charter member of the Leasburg Ruritan Club, where he served as president numerous times and received many honors and awards. He took pride in his county and community, loved and helped so many people and was always willing to serve. He was predeceased in October 2011 by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley Lunsford Ashby, and a sister, Joy Ashby Powell.

      Surviving Mr. Ashby include his supportive and close family, son Mitchell T. Ashby, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., his daughters Renee Ashby Rash and son-in-law, Terry Rash, of Charlotte, and Lisa Ashby, of Leasburg; his loving grandchildren, Lora Marie Ashby, of Burlington, Nichole Weston Farlow and husband Dennis, of Greensboro, Taft Ashby, of Burlington, Sterling Carter, of Yanceyville, Clark Swann, of Danville, Va., Jacob Swann of Blanch; and one precious great granddaughter, Zoie Marie Ashby, of Burlington; a sister, Sandra Ashby Byers, of Kitty Hawk; and brother, Floyd George Ashby, of Goldboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

      He was blessed to have such fine caregivers in the home over the past 2 1/2 years, Cornelia (Lea) Lorenzo, Ashley Lawson, Jessica Haraway and Jeremy Cobb, whom he loved as his own. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Harrelson Funeral Home, Yanceyville, NC from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Union United Methodist Church, N.C. 119 N, Leasburg. The family will be receiving friends at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Union United Methodist Church Building or Cemetery fund. Harrelson Funeral Home is assisting the Ashby family with arrangements.
