Badge Story: Sheriff Lynn Banks Williamson (1918-1987), Caswell County Sheriff 1953-1958. This badge was found by an operator of a Garrett Metal Detector, who returned the badge to the Williamson family (believed to have been lost by Sheriff Williamson while quail (bob white quail, of course) hunting). The connection between the badge and the surviving relative (son of Sheriff Lynn Banks Williamson) was made on facebook. In the spring of 1966, Caswell County Deputy Sheriff Bobby Poteat resigned to run against his boss Sheriff Frank Daniel in the July Democratic primary. As there was no Republican challenger, the winner of the primary would be the Caswell County Sheriff.
With Poteat's resignation, Sheriff Daniel had a deputy sheriff's position to fill. He appointed John Brooks Arnold, 57, from Providence. Arnold lasted only a few weeks, dying suddenly of a heart attack April 8, 1966.
Bobby Poteat defeated Frank Daniel, who had served for eight years (after defeating Lynn Banks Williamson in 1958). Poteat was re-elected twice after his initial 1966 victory (1970 and 1974). However, he was defeated in 1978 and by early 1979 was in federal prison. He was succeeded by James Isaac Smith, Jr.

Caswell County Sheriff History: Or So the Story Goes
When Caswell County Sheriff John Yancey Gatewood died in 1954, the Caswell County Commissioners appointed James Whitt Powell (1895-1966) to serve the remaining term. Powell apparently liked the job and later in that year ran in the Democratic Party primary, the winner of which was assured election in the fall. Powell was opposed by Lynn Banks Williamson (1918-1987). Neither candidate achieved a majority as there were nine men running for the position. A second primary election resulted in a win for Williamson, who became Caswell County Sheriff, and served in that position until defeated by Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Daniel (1916-2006) in 1958.
