_______________
His name is seen as Raney in the will of his mother, Minerva Catherine (Kate) Stanfield, where he was described as deceased. Her will was signed in December 1934; thus, Rainey Younger Stanfield died before that date. The exact date of his death is uncertain, but is believed to be 11 June 1903 based upon a very worn gravestone in the Stanfield Family Cemetery (Leasburg Road, Person County, North Carolina.

_______________
Nannie Belle Long Hamlin was born December 19, 1880, as the seventh child of Stephen Matthew Long and Elizabeth Jane Clayton Long. She is affectionately remembered by so many people in Person County as "Aunt Nannie" because she outlived all her six brothers and sisters. This writer remembers how marvelous it was growing up in such a large Long family. For many years reunions were held at Christmas which all the Long kindred tried to attend. Also many in the family paid their respects by frequent visits to see Aunt Nannie.
She was born at the Long Homeplace located near the Warren's Grove community off Highway #49 traveling south from Roxboro. She attended Sunnyside School near her home. Nannie Belle was married twice. Her first husband was Rainey Y. Stanfield (23 March 1877 -- 11 June 1903). While Nannie was expecting their first child, tragedy struck. One month before her due date, her husband died. Nannie had a son Rainey Wise Stanfield born July 18, 1903. Nannie was soon to grieve again because "little Rainey" died from pneumonia when he was just over two years old on November 20, 1905.
Nannie's second husband was Stephen Gibbons Hamlin. The were married June 9, 1907. Nannie's grief was not over. In 1908 she and Gib had twin daughters born to them. Both of the twins died in 1908. Nannie did not give up her hope for children, though. On June 18, 1909, Lartasia Odell Hamlin was born. Two other children were born to Nannie and Gib. They were Stephen Forris Hamlin born May 18, 1911, and Elbert Felton Hamlin born April 21, 1914.
Nannie worked hard during her life. She carried much responsibility along with Gib in raising heir family and farming the Hamlin homeplace. She loved to grow flowers. This writer remembers flowers of many varieties adorning the land around the homeplace.
In 1934 Nannie welcomed her first son's wife, Virginia Carolina Cobb, into her home. In 1937, she welcomed her daughter's husband Samuel Hester Cates into her home. Nannie's first grandchild, Reginald Hamlin Cates, was born 19 November 1941 to Hester and Odell. The three of them lived in the homeplace until 1952 when they moved to Hurdle Mills.
Nannie's youngest son, Felton, married Esther Dorothy Harris and on February 21, 1945, Leon Felton Hamlin was born to become Nannie's second grandchild. The three of them lived near the homeplace and farmed the Hamlin farmland with Nannie and Gib.
Nannie's third and fourth grandchildren were Linda Cobb Hamlin (3 January 196) and Donna Dale Hamlin (1 January 1950). They were the children born to Forris and Virginia. The four of them lived at the homeplace until the children left home. Only Forris and Virginia remain at the homeplace now.
Nannie's second husband, Gibbons, died 13 December 1948. With his death, she grieved again. Nannie remained very active until her last ten years. She suffered small strokes that affected her ability to walk normally, but she could be found most any day of the week walking with her hoe to her much beloved garden of flowers. On the morning of February 28, 1963, she died. Indeed her 82 years had been full and happy even though she did suffer much grief.
Sources for this material are the Hamlin Family Bible, the tombstone markings at Mount Zion [United] Methodist Church, and the family records of Forris Hamlin.
