The Wednesday, July 25, 1928, edition of The Roxbor Courier includes an account of the automobile accident that killed Walter Lee Stanfield, 39:
"Walter Lea Standfield [sic], 39, a native of Person County, who was killed Wednesday night when the automobile in which he was riding plunged down a steep embankment on the South Boston highway, route No. 13, between Luster Springs and the Hyco River bridge. It was said that Mr. Standfield was en route from South Boston for a visit to his mother's home, situated on route No. 1, Roxboro, when the fatal accident occurred. Mr. Standfield is a native of Person county, but for the past few years he had been Located at Hopewell, Va. Surviving Mr. Standfield are his widow, Mrs. Eula Standfield, his mother, Mrs. J. B. Standfield, and two brothers, L. G. and Ira Standfield. Several children also survive."
The reporter failed to mention Walter Lee's other siblings.
_______________
Based upon a picture in the possession of Richmond Stanfield Frederick, Jr., Walter Lee Stanfield had at least three children. A note on the back of the picture written by Mona Frederick to her brother Richmond Stanfield Frederick identifies people in the photograph (see above) as: Uncle Ira's children on the left; Uncle Walter & family on the right, along with "granma Stanfield." Walter and Eula are shown with three small children. The youngest appears to be around two years old.
Transcript of Note on Back of Picture:
"Richmond: Mary Stanfield gave me a picture, for you and one for me. This picture is Mama's home where she lived before she married. The picture on left are Uncle Ira's children on right is Uncle Walter & Family and Granma. Do you remember it? Sure carries me back when I went to see Granma Stanfield. Hope all are well. Wish all of you would come to see me. Is Sally back? Love, Sis M"
Note that the "granma Stanfield" in the picture is Kate Stanfield (Manerva Catherine ("Kate") Fox Stanfield).(1849-1936)
The Mary Stanfield who gave the photographs to Mona (Frederick) Clayton most likely was Mary Hilmo (Stanfield) Shooter.
_______________
Walter Lee Stanfield, born in Person County October 28, 1888, died July 18, 1928, was the son of Jeremiah (Jerry) Bradsher Stanfield, (10 June 1850 -- 2 November 1891) and Catherine Minerva Fox Stanfield (13 December 1849 -- 2 May 1936). Beulah Bessie Whitt was born December 28, 1890, and died 18 June 1942. She was the daughter of John Thomas Whitt (4 September 1861 -- 26 June 1930), and Alice Brooks (28 August 1866 -- 7 January 1942). Walter and Beulah were married December 25, 1907, in Person County by the Rev. George T. Watkins. They settled near his parents' home on the old Stanfield place and Walter assisted with the family's farming operation. A few years later, he moved his young family to South Boston, Virginia, where he worked with Reynolds Tobacco Company. Walter Stanfield died in an automobile accident on July 18, 1928. He is buried in the Stanfield family cemetery near the Leasburg highway.
Beulah returned with her children to the home of her parents, John T. and Alice Whitt, in the Providence community, and she began weaving the frayed threads of her existence into the fabric of a loving, dependable, and provident life. Beulah Whitt Stanfield was a remarkable woman by anyone's measure. A niece said of her "Aunt Beulah was one angel living on earth!" She was a gifted seamstress, a skill gainfully employed when she did alterations for one of Roxboro's department stores. Her greatest artistry, though, was devoted to the family, especially the grandchildren. She lovingly sewed layettes for expected babies, and dainty dresses and petticoats. Tom Harris, the eldest grandson, proudly wore a real suit -- cap, coat, and pants of red corduroy -- all made just for him by "Mommy-Boo!"
Perhaps her most notable contribution was in the field of health care. She was known to be an excellent nurse, and Dr. George Gentry frequently called upon her to care for his patients. Beulah sometimes stayed in the patient's home for two or three weeks helping the family to a healthy, happy start in caring for a new baby.
Mrs. Stanfield's death on June 18, 1842, came as a shock to her family and to the community. She apparently had not been ill, but suffered a stroke and died within a few hours. She is buried in the cemetery at Providence Baptist Church where she held membership since early childhood.
Five children were born to Beulah and Walter Lee Stanfield:
1. Jerry Lee Stanfield (18 October 1908 -- 2 July 1967). Married Bobbie Grasty, born 14 June 1916. Their two children are (a) Jerry Lee Stanfield, Jr., born 24 September 1941, married Brenna Sheroma. A son, "Scotty" Lee Stanfield was born to Brenna and Jerry Lee, Jr., on 28 December 1967. They live in Honolulu. (b) Bobbie Jane Stanfield, born 19 May 1947, married Chad Hilton.
2. Alyce Minerva Stanfield (18 March 1910 -- 5 March 1980). Married Charles McIver Featherston (17 December 1906 -- 20 September 1972). Two daughters: (a) Gail Lee Featherston, born and died 2 April 1939; and (b) Susan Ann Featherston, born 9 October 1946, married William Umstead Laws, born 24 January 1944. They have two daughters: Alisa Hope Laws, born 30 July 1971, and Katharine Lynell Laws, born 5 August 1976.
3. Dorothy Whit Stanfield, born 1 May 1915, married Thomas Jefferson Harris (born 24 November 1912). Three sons: (a) Thomas Jefferson Harris, Jr., born 25 April 1938, has a son Christopher, born 18 February 1970; (b) William Harold Harris, born 13 April 1945, married Linda Kaye Whitfield, born 28 February 1947. Their two children are Jeffrey Nathan Harris, born 20 May 1974, and Jessica Brooke Harris, born 11 May 1979; (c) Robert Lee Harris (born and died 20 April 1948).
4. Harold Whit Stanfield, born 16 August 1921, married Melvine Gentry, born 15 March 1924. Harold and Melvine had three children, the first two of whom died in infancy: (a) Debra Lee, born and died 10 June 1951; (b) infant boy, born and died 17 August 1952; and (c) Teresa Gentry Stanfield, born 2 March 1954, married James Hubert Gibson, Jr., born 17 June 1953, and they have a daughter, Shannon Michelle, born 19 September 1982.
5. Gloria Ann Stanfield, born 15 September 1925. Married Walter Morgan Woody, born 5 September 1922. They have three daughters: (a) Cindy Ann Woody, born 16 November 1951, married Darryl Carver, born 12 May 1953. Cindy and Darryl have two sons: David Woody Carver, born 19 September 1979, and Stephen Alan Carver, born 26 July 1981. (b) Melanie B. Woody, born 24 April 1954, lives in Roxboro and manages a restaurant. (c) Alyce Morgan Woody, born 18 December 1956, married Mark Douglas Eisler, born 19 September 1958. They live in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
With the exception of Dorothy Stanfield Harris, all of the Stanfield children settled in Person County. Both Jerry and Harold built their homes in the Providence community. Alyce and McIver Featherston bought the Preston Featherston homeplace on Morgan Street in Roxboro, and Gloria Woody also lives in Roxboro. Dot and Jeff Harris live in Hoke County, North Carolina, on Route One Raeford.
