      _______________

      Mary Elizabeth Stanfield

Mary Elizabeth Stanfield, the first child of the Rev. Benjamin Elijah and Josephine Hambrick Stanfield, was born March 5, 1901, in Leasburg, N.C. She is a descendant of Benjamin Franklin Stanfield (See related story.) She was a graduate of Louisburg College and attended the 50th anniversary of her graduating class at the college in Louisburg, N.C. in 1971 or 1972.

On May 22, 1922 she married Rom Sanford Rittenbury, born Feb. 26, 1894. He was a pharmacist and a veteran of World War I. During the war he was gassed and wounded. These ills troubled him all his life.

Mary S. Rittenbury had many talents. She was a teacher for many years at Alexander Home, a home for disturbed children in Charlotte, N.C. Working with these children required special skill, patience, and a sense of humor, all of which she had in abundance. Her education did not stop when she finished college, she continued to take college courses at evening classes and was an avid reader.

An artist, Mary painted many pictures both in oils and in water colors. Her paintings grace many of the homes in Leasburg as well as elsewhere. Sometimes she designed and painted greeting cards for her friends on special occasions. Those fortunate enough to receive these cards kept them because they were beautiful works of art. She loved ceramics and had her own molds and kiln. Delicate flowers for her creations were fashioned by hand. Mary enjoyed watching television, but she hardly ever just sat and watched. Most of the time her hands were occupied with knitting, embroidering or tatting. She enjoyed playing bridge and scrabble and always worked the crossword puzzle in the morning newspaper.

Mary and Rom Rittenbury had one child, Max Sanford Rittenbury, born Dec. 1, 1928 in Bailey, N.C. Max went to pre-med school at the Citadel. He received his medical training at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. During the Korean War, he entered the Navy in 1953 and served his internship at the Bethesda National Naval Medical Center. When he came out of the Navy in 1956, he returned to the Medical College of Virginia for his surgical training. He was an Associate Professor on the staff there until moving to Charleston, S.C. in 1966. At this time he is Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of S.C.

On Dec. 27, 1950 Dr. Max S. Rittenbury married Margaret Brooks, who was born in Charleston, S.C. June 14, 1928. They have two daughters. Their first child Margaret Elizabeth Rittenbury who is called "Megs," was born Sept. 30, 1958. She graduated from the University of S.C. in May 1980. She married Wiley Lesslie in 1982. Megs decided she wanted to have medical training and entered the Medical University of S.C. in 1984 where she is a freshman.

Julia Ann Rittenbury, their second child, was born April 5, 1961. She attended the College of Charleston where she received a degree in Business Administration. At present she is working with a computer firm in Charleston, S.C. She married Michael Morros in 1984.

Mary S. Rittenbury and her husband, Rom, returned to Mary's birthplace, Leasburg, to live in 1956. Here Rom S. Rittenbury died of [lung] cancer Dec. 21, 1956. He is buried at the Leasburg Community Cemetery.

After Miss Mattie L. Pulliam retired as Postmaster of Leasburg in 1959, Mary assumed charge of the post office May 31, 1959. On Aug. 31, 1960, she was appointed Postmaster, a position many of her ancestors had held in the preceding 100 years. She retired in 1965 not long before her 65th birthday.

After her retirement she often visited her son, Max, and his family in Charleston, S.C. During the spring and summer, when she was home in Leasburg, one might find her digging in her flowers, weeding her strawberry bed, or making jelly. In the fall and winter she might be painting a picture, making ceramics, knitting, tatting or writing letters. She was a faithful correspondent and always answered her mail. She never discouraged drop-in visits and was always hospitable. In summer she might say, "It's hot as a firecracker, don't you want a glass of tea?" In winter it was, "Don't you want a cup of coffee?"

When Mary Rittenbury died Nov. 8, 1979, she left a void no one else could fill. She is buried beside her husband, Rom, in the Leasburg Community Cemetery.

Note that by the time of the 1940 census, the Rittenburys had moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Rom Sanford Rittenbury apparently owned and operated a drug store. There is some indication from the Boykin family that Rittenbury owned the drug store in Bailey, North Carolina from 1931 to 1937. Thus, it may have been in or around 1937 when the move was made to Charlotte.

We have been asked by a grandson of the owner of Boykin Drug Company for any photographs we may have of Rom Rittenbury, especially one of him standing in front of an apothecary cabinet (see below) in his drug store. That image is known to exist but the original has been lost. Can anyone help? Thanks.

      _______________

Hello, I am searching for a photo of Mr. Rittenbury standing in front of an apothecary cabinet and I believe may have been taken of Mr. Rittenbury in the Rittenbury Pharmacy, Bailey, NC, prior to 1937. Mr. Rittenbury bought my grandfather's drugstore business, Boykin Drug Company, in 1931 in Bailey, NC. Also, I'd like to locate a photo of Mr. Rittenbury if one is available. My husband and I are writing about The Country Doctor Museum, Bailey, and early treatments which included druggists. Also, one of our next writing projects is the history of the Town of Bailey, NC, which will include the history of the drug store before and after Mr. Rittenbury owned it. Any info would be most helpful. Thank you, Margaret Boykin Bailey.

      Pharmacy Cabinet

My grandmother, Neppie Renfrow Boykin, and my father, Roy Thomas Boykin, as well as other family members identified this apothecary cabinet as originally belonged to W. M. Boykin and was in W. M. Boykin's Drug Store in Bailey. His drug store was on Main Street. W. M. "Bill" Boykin was my grandfather. At one time there was a photograph on display in the Country Doctor Museum that included my grandfather, W. M. Boykin, standing with another gentleman in front of the cabinet. I do not know who the photo belonged to or what happened to it? And I do not know the exact provenance of the cabinet but again family members said it was sold with the Drug Store to Rittenbury and eventually became the property of J. B. Bartlett. Again, I have no documentation to prove the provenance of the piece. One of the apothecary bottles and a label from the Boykin Drug Store is still in the family. Boykin Drug Store was incorporated by W. M. Boykin and two others, Patterson and Liles. The corporation notice was published in the April 1912 edition of The Pharmaceutical Era.
