Caswell County History
This week's look at Caswell County’s history takes us back to the mid-20th century, to the old C. B. Rogers General Merchandise Store, which was located on the square in Yanceyville, and served Caswell County from the 1940s into the 1970s. Rogers & Company’s store was located on the east side of the square on the first floor of the Upchurch Building, next door to A. H. Motz. Clyde Banks Rogers (1900-1980) was a Caswell County Commissioner from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. He sold the store in 1973, retiring with his wife, Myrtle May Blalock Rogers (1906-1993), to Greensboro. The couple had four children: Curtis W. Rogers, Edith Ann Rogers, Carl Banks Rogers, and Richard Russell Rogers.

(Top): Inside the C. B. Rogers store February, 1938. You can tell it’s late winter because of the bundles of plant bed canvas. (Left to Right): C. B. Rogers, F. T. Whitfield, owner of a general store in Bushy Fork, Person County, N.C., unknown female, store clerk Ed Mise.
(Bottom Left): C. B. Rogers (left) with son, Carl Banks Rogers (1940-2012).
(Bottom Right): Rogers’s son, Curtis W. (Curt) Rogers, graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in 1953. He owned an optical manufacturing company in East Providence, Rhode Island. Rogers sold the company in 1988 and retired to Arizona.
_____
Much of the foregoing, including the photgraphs, is from The Caswell Messenger (Yanceyville, North Carolina), 28 November 2018. Note the discrepancy in the date the store operated. The large photograph is dated February 1938, but the text suggests that the business began operation in the 1940s.
The F. T. Whitfield and unidentified woman in the photograph most likely are Franklin Thomas Whitfield (1894-1950) and wife Martha Susan Long Whitfield (1893-1974). Both Clyde Banks Rogers and his wife Myrtle May Blalock Rogers had family and friends in Bush Fork, Person County, North Carolina.
The Ed Mise shown in the large photograph as a store clerk probably is James Edward (Ed) Mise (1886-1946).

$100 Taken From C. B. Rogers Store
A thief or thieves entered the store of C. B. Rogers on the east side of the square Saturday afternoon and took approximately $100 [$743.78 in today's money] from the cash register, but left around $25 in change.
Mr. Rogers said that he left to go home shortly after 3 p.m. and the money was missing when he returned around 4 p.m. He said that he forgot to lock the store when he left.
Saturday night someone broke the glass out of the back door of the county's old library building and entered. Nothing was missing from the premises.
It was also reported that someone entered the county dog pound and stole two dogs.
It was also reported someone cut a hose on one of the washing machines at a local laundry.
Citizens reported speeding and excessive noises from car mufflers Saturday night around the county seat.
Two persons were reported drunk or asleep, one in a car and the other on the pavement, two blocks east of the square Sunday morning.
