      _______________

LDS has birth as 4 Oct 1760, not 14 Oct 1760. Birth date also seen as 1 June 1763, but not confirmed with respect to any primary source. Some show middle name McConnell, but without supporting documentation.
      _______________

Mrs. Mary Davidson Smith died in her eightieth year on May 29, 1842. She had been "for many years . . . a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church" and was "one of the first settlers of" Buncombe County.

      Wife of Col. Daniel Smith

References for the name of Daniel Smith’s wife: A History of Buncombe Co., p. 747 by F.A. Sondley, LL.D.; NC Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files p. 3176 by Virgil D. White; Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western NC; Burke County Vol. I, p. 58 by Emmett R. White; A History of The Smith-McDowell House p.6. Old Buncombe County Heritage, Vol. I, p. 593 states: "In the fall of 1781 Daniel Smith and Mary McConnell Davidson were married at the 'The Glades' home of her father Major William Davidson in Burke County (now McDowell County) North Carolina. Mary Davidson was a niece of Samuel Davidson who was killed by Indians at his homestead on Christian Creek near Swannanoa in 1784. It is said but not certainly known that Samuel Davidson’s wife was a sister of Daniel Smith." Source: DP

References to her name are found in many places, but only Old Buncombe County Heritage lists her middle name as McConnell. However, it is quite possible because that was her mother’s maiden name. In places where compilers list the children of William Davidson and Margaret McConnell they show the middle name of four of the children but no middle names for the remaining children (including Mary Davidson). Thus, there is no conclusive proof that her middle name was McConnell. Source: DP
      _____________

In the Daniel Smith Pension Letter 1926 her death date is given as 20 May 1843.
