Simmons Family Celebrates 100 Years
By Doris Simpson, Burlington
The Caswell Messenger (Yanceyville, North Carolina)
12 December 2012
On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, the descendants of John Doake Simmons (1888-1965) and Mamie Hopkins Miles Simmons (1893-1988) held their annual reunion at Concord Christian Church in Caswell County, North Carolina. It was a special celebration, what would have been their 100th wedding anniversary. They were married on December 25, 1912. John and Mamie would bring their family together many times during the year, but Christmas was a very special time for the gathering at their home. They would be so proud to know their family is still united and enjoying what they started.
Their family grew to include four sons, Edgar William Simmons, Raleigh Doake Simmons, Claude Simmons, and Earl Simmons (all deceased); and four daughters, Myrtle Lee Simmons Allred, Eva Simmons Coble, Sue Simmons Brooks, and Doris Simmons Simpson. Surviving are Sue and Doris and two daughters-in-law, Margaret (Earl) and Naomi (Claude). The couple had 19 grandchildren, with descendants reaching into the sixth generation.
The whole family was so pleased that the home place has been restored and enjoyed by their great granddaughter Beth and her husband Tony Kirby.
