About three years ago Jim told me one thing he wanted to do in his lifetime was to meet Dr. Bill Friday. Jim had always admired him and I was glad to make it happen for Jim. I called Dr. Friday and he was more than happy to do it. In fact, he hosted the luncheon at the Carolina Club on the UNC campus. WD Pleasant came along and we all had a fine lunch and interesting conversation. Jim got to ask Dr. Friday anything he wanted. Jim thanked me profusely for that luncheon for the next couple of years.

I just got off the phone with Dr. Friday and told him the whole sad story. He remembered Jim well. And while he was saddened by Jim’s death, he’s glad that he was able to help fill up Jim’s “bucket list.” And I was glad to be able to bring together two of my favorite people.

"Nancye and I bought our house at 151 Cumberland Drive in March of 1968, just before our wedding. We sold it to Jim in 1972. I offered Jim double what he paid for it ($18,900), but he turned me down. Our monthly payment, which included taxes and insurance, was $98."
